Yeah, the weekend long runs are what will really be the killer. I did Jeff Galloway's half marathon plan with a time goal this winter, and it had me up to 17 miles a couple weeks ago. It took me 3 hours. Marathon training is going to take me to 20+; well over 4 hours. I need my boys to be a little older so they don't drive my wife nuts while I'm gone every weekend.
Old enough to know better, still too young to care
I've never really thought about the math before. I've just heard people talk about total times. Seeing it laid out as a sub 8 minute/mile average makes it damned impressive to my "not very serious runner" self. Nice job Alistair.

Yeah, when it's a push for me to run a 7 minute mile, for a mile, I know that I still have a ways to go. Even 8:00 is tough for much farther than a 5k at this point.

You're making me feel better. I went for a run last year and wasn't sure why I felt awful for most of it. When I finished I saw Strava had recorded a new personal best 8:16 mile time.
The easy winter led to me getting to the gym more often this year. Maybe I'll be able to go sub 8:00 for a mile this summer. It won't be a long run though.
