IMO a cheap product for a cheap price. No forward assist, chrome, etc.... bottom of the barrel kind of setup.
Keep in mind palmetto do not make the products they are retailer and they sell some good stuff but also a lot of crap. Hit and miss sort of deals.
An decent upper with a decent barrel and proper receiver and budget handguard will not be a lot more.
Even if you spend 100 or 200 more, what is that compared to all the ammo you are going to put through it. Also something that might run better, more accurate and will last longer.

    What kind of competition anyway?

Thinking about getting into 3 Gun in spring. Would like to start planning something now so I can acquire it piece at a time. At this point I'm wide open to suggestions on build but don't want to go crazy expensive. I have a stripped lower waiting so I'm at square one.

        some ideas...

If you are going to do 3 gun I would start with a quality 3 gun barrel that will be more accurate than a chrome barrel and will last more than twice anyway...

9310 super bolt matched to that barrel...

This upper will work just fine...

This is the article that got me thinking.
Three-gun is one of the most addictive competitive shooting sports, and requires quality equipment.

Lots of articles like that. With the setup above you have a superior barrel and the rest is all pretty good budget and functional.
The shell is not important. The internals is what matters the most. A good barrel, block and the bolt and carrier that are the beating heart of the AR.
Trigger group too to what you like. I have mine setup anyway from 2 to 3.5 lbs depending on use.

I would definitely pass on a receiver with no forward assist. This upper has no BCG, which really isn't all that big of a deal, but that will be an extra expense.

Hopefully not a thread hijack - anyone have thoughts about nitride vs chromed barrels?
                Athiest. Because... science

                  No hijack - great question.

Thanks Meke. Great list. Will have to start a project list with these items as part. I have various parts around that I have picked up here and there so I'll have to see what's on hand. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions.

OK what about stock options? I hate the fact that we have to use these ridiculous "compliant" solutions but until I move to free America I don't want to be looking over my shoulder every time I use the rifle. The 3 main options seem to be the Thordsen, Exile Machine and MonsterMan solutions. Currently using the AR spur which I don't like. Since the others are all butt ugly, I figure I should look to function over form. Any experience with them? What do you love/hate?

No experience with Exile but can say that MonsterMan kinds sucks (definitely need ambi safety), Spur blows (even with the Patriot trigger guard finger hooky thing), the most functional (but butt-ugly fugliest) is the Thordsen FRS (fukking retarded stock). God I hate this state!

I have to bend over too far

                        I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

...and for what it's worth, none of the above have actually been officially approved as "NY compliant". Did I mention I hate this goddam state?

The monster man is not even an option. I don't know what that is supposed to be and see it as an accident waiting to happen.
The spur is also another useless option in practical terms imo.
The exile can work but in needs to be rebated a tad specially for people with small hands.
The FRS I don't see any problems with it. It looks funny but it actually works great. It is not better nor worse than a rifle grip and the stock is in line with the bore as originally intended.
                            There are other options too.
