  • Americans With Disabilities Act

As most of you know, my hearing isn't great. I do OK with hearing aids, but there are still plenty of situations where I struggle. Enter COVID. I rely on visual cues quite a bit to help understand what people are saying. Mandatory masking not only muffled voices, but eliminated the visual cues I relied on. Then, on top of the masks, many retail establishments added plastic barriers between the customer and employee. This further muffled voices and made communication almost impossible in many stores and restaurants.

Wondering if Norm Deguerre x2 has heard anything about an ADA lawsuit against all the COVID measures that are horrible for people with hearing loss. If nobody has filed one yet, I'll gladly volunteer to be a plaintiff. As if the jab mandates aren't bad enough, all the barriers to communication just throw salt on the wound.

i know it's not the same, but i can't believe all the other code requirements that were basically ignored/suspended as well. an easy example was drinking fountains and other plumbing fixtures. crazy how many urinals were "closed" for social distancing, and how many DF's that were "closed" so as to not spread illness. all of those were code requirements, they weren't there because someone just wanted to spend the money to put them in. unbelievable.

You deal with that stuff more than most people. I didn't even think about the code requirements for stuff like drinking fountains.

yeah but we all have had to deal with it. especially our kids. school drinking fountains have mostly been shut off for 2 years. same with those in many athletic facilities. if you didn't bring your own, you're SOL. or you can go buy a water out of the vending machine. wtf.

Never knew that drinking fountains were installed due to building codes. Interesting.

yup! they aren't required everywhere but just as toilets and sinks are required, drinking fountains and service sinks are code requirements.
basically 1 drinking fountain is required for every 100 people you can have in an office or school for example. and basically every time you need one, there should be a high and a low. that's not a small number. other occupancies are different, like assembly areas are 1 per 500 or 1000 people depending on use.
if anyone's ever bored, here are the minimum plumbing facilities required in nys:

Don't forget kids especially with autism who struggle to communicate with others and looking for those social cues that they can't see. Also the CDC reduced the goals for kids at certain ages because covid has stunted their growth as a whole as well.
