My original comment on that post was exactly as you had said: common ground in that no one wants to kids killed in schools or people at concerts. The end to the violence is everyone’s goal, it’s just that the two sides see different routes to the same end goal. Tailgate where Denise came in later to ask me the question.

So here's the thing. I've always agreed with the saying that arguing on the internet is like competing in the special olympics. But not engaging is also a way to lose the battle of the long game. Leftists and antis have no problem spouting all kinds of inflammatory idiocy on most social media platforms. When there is no pushback, they are only further emboldened. Plus, when there is no pushback it means otherwise open minded people who might be interested in valid information on an issue will only hear the one side. How many unicorns who haven't actually formed a hardened opinion at this point I have no idea.

In communication theory I believe it is called 'mainstreaming'. When only one viewpoint dominates the discussions, more people tend to adapt that position. Mainstreaming was far more prevalent back when there were three main news networks that fed everyone their nightly news and the internet was barely a thing. But the same concept still applies.

James Lindsay coined the "OK Groomer" response to people arguing for teaching sex and gender theory to young grade schoolers. It's not a rational/logical argument, but it gained traction and was effective at putting those in favor of such things back on their heels. Gun owners have been trying to make rational pro-gun arguments for decades and I'm not sure how effective it has been. Maj Toure started making the case that all gun control is both racist and sexist. Both James and Maj are making arguments that force their opponents to play defense and I think that's going to be more effective, and it's similar to usmcveteran asking the 'why' questions. Most of us don't have the time to really argue through the pro reasons with a person making an emotional anti argument. But, forcing the antis to spend their time defending their position reverses the efforts required. When you throw in a cultural hot button such as child grooming, racism, or sexism to use as a cudgel, it makes the anti position even less pleasant to defend.

Maj's angles for gun control are probably the best way to go. I'm far too literal to be good at coming up with original angles for stuff like this, and I'm quite sure it has cost me lots of money in lost income at jobs I've had over the years. I'm reading books and trying to get better at it.

Given the left's recent 'passionate' ACAB protests, there might be a decent angle there to force antis to defend police shootings. The water can get kind of muddy in there, but just spitballing.

More details are coming out and I'm guessing most of the LEOs involved have already left town.

The exterior door that the shooter entered could only be locked from the outside, and likely had a crash bar on the inside. So the teacher who closed it had no way of knowing if it was locked or not.

The door to the classroom the shooter closed himself into wasn't actually locked.

The police officers on scene had enough manpower, weapons, and even a shield within minutes of being on scene, but still stood back and did nothing.

The officer everyone claims was in charge and gave the order to wait, claims he didn't know he was actually in charge of the response and thought someone else was making the decisions.

What a nightmare of a mess for all the families involved.
