  • The Covid Vaccine challenge by USMC

I have a challenge for you if you choose to accept it.

Today on my way to work I decided to call the CDC to ask vaccine questions.

My specific question was why should I be vaccinated after recovering from the delta variant in August?

The gentleman I spoke to verified the question and details of question and put me on hold to check the CDC resources. He asked for my zip code as well.
??????when he came back to call he verified that I was eligible for vaccination and offered to send me 3 locations I could get vaccinated at.

I told him that didn't address my question of why after having covid should I get vaccinated. He put me on hold again to check the CDC resources
When he picked up he offered to read me some other scripts and I said as long as they addressed my question that would be great (I was very friendly and legitimately interested in answer and not a dick). He then started reading the things he had in front of him (also said he was taking notes to document call???) And said he found something that related to my question.

He asked if I had been antibody tested and started talking about antibodies and how repeat infection was rare.

Then I had to go into work so we ended the call. But not once was I given ANY reason to get the vaccine lol.

So I challenge any of you if you have time and are bored to call the CDC and politely ask them the reasons you should be vaccinated if you have already had COVID and let me know if they can give you a reason.

The number I called was 1-800-232-4636.

I assumed (silly me) that they would have an answer on why you should get vaccinated after having covid since that's the CDC recommendation based on science. And since it's based on science discussions were had I assume debating the issue and rationale given for the recommendation. But maybe I'm wrong in that too?

I'm actually kind of impressed that he didn't just spew some random BS about how natural immunity isn't as good as vaccine immunity.

I emailed them over weekend and got a response but I sent follow up email to them and still waiting for response.

Basically rationale is that we don't know how long natural immunity lasts and it likely wanes over time.

One of my follow up questions asked if that was also true for vaccination and how long vaccine immunity lasts.

I got another reply today with information from CDC. I responded back again asking 2 main questions.

1: how many people with a confirmed positive covid case had a confirmed reinfection case and of those how many were severe which led to hospitalization or death.

2: when will Comirnaty be available to the public.

Here's a snippet of info I got so far. It's interesting because they make it seem like you're rolling the dice not getting vaccinated even if you had covid and then go on to says it's uncommon but possible to get reinfected.

Which I think is what they say about getting vaccinated.

"Current evidence shows that antibody responses after infection with the virus that causes COVID-19 vary widely by individual. For example, some people with asymptomatic or mild infections might not develop antibodies, or their antibodies might not last very long. Also, not all antibody tests detect the same antibodies.
Some antibodies might be more important than others in long-term immunity, but it's not yet known for sure. Scientists are conducting studies to learn how much protection antibodies from infection may provide and how long that protection lasts.

Based on what we know right now, the immune response from vaccination is more predictable than the immune response from infection, and vaccination is always a safer way to build protection. Getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you.

If you have recovered from COVID-19, CDC recommends that you still get vaccinated, even if you have had a positive antibody test result, because we do not yet know how long you might be protected. It is possible, although uncommon, that you could be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 again. Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 will help keep you from getting seriously ill even if you do get COVID-19 again."

Moot point because it applies to studying the antibody response the vaccine just as much as the response to natural infection.

Also moot because you've already had Covid and recovered.

I recently saw an article saying that natural immunity lasts at least 1 year. Considering how long Covid has been around, it's hard to measure much past 1 year for a study. So what are the odds that as time goes by, we continue to gather data saying natural immunity lasts pretty much indefinitely because the data will actually be available as time goes on. Oh yean, and because that's also how natural immunity to a variety of other viruses works and we've known as much for many decades.

                    Natural immunity FTW:

Well this is disappointing. I have to reread all the emails so far and decide if I want to continue to ask questions but I feel this kind of reaffirms my thoughts.

So I posted that snippet yesterday talking about reinfection being uncommon. Which was a change in wording from the past when it was called rare.

Now I get this response to my question about how many confirmed reinfection cases there were and of those how many were severe cases requiring hospitalization or death.

                      This is the answer.

"Currently, CDC's COVID-19 case surveillance data does not identify reinfections. While there have been reports of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, these reports are rare. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we expect to see more cases of reinfection.

On August 5, 2020, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) issued an updated COVID-19 case definition that provides the criteria to distinguish a new COVID-19 case from an existing case. To be counted as a new case, a repeat positive test must occur at least 3 months after the initial positive test.

CDC has created a protocol that public health departments can use to investigate suspected SARS-CoV-2 reinfection cases. Your public health department may be able to provide more information about how SARS-CoV-2 reinfections are tracked in your area."
