Lots of interesting things to consider. It really doesn't seem to be a super killer virus and China was upset with US for blowing it out of proportion. Now that it's spread around world there is a panic. I wonder if the US made a big deal of it to try and cripple China's economy and now it's had the unintended consequence of screwing up the world's? We're definitely in trade war with China so I wouldn't be surprisedwww.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!

interestingly any and all of my friends in the medical fields have all just laughed and rolled their eyes at the mention of the novel corona virus. I tried to make the point to them that USMCVET pointed out that it's not just the virus that is a potential issue but the effects, even if mostly manufactured by the media.
Anyway, my primary care physician today said that getting the flu shot is good because if nothing else if you were to end up with flu symptoms, having received the flu shot would help them rule out certain strains. thought that was interesting anyway.

I'm well aware this virus isn't much of a threat to me and my immediate family, but being completely dismissive of it always strikes me as odd. Especially coming from a medical professional.Originally posted by big flash View Postinterestingly any and all of my friends in the medical fields have all just laughed and rolled their eyes at the mention of the novel corona virus.
Maybe medical professionals are just more fatalistic about things? They realize lots of things can kill you?
I've seen posts from one PA I know where she compares the number of people killed by the flu last year with the number of people killed by the coronavirus. But from a math perspective, that's just dumb. Comparing a year's worth of data to a brand new phenomenon that has only been around for a bit over a month doesn't make me very confident in her basic math skills. If her basic math skills aren't that great.......
The best estimates for mortality rate comparisons are roughly flu .2% vs. coronavirus 2%. Even if your odds are really low, that is A LOT of people dying and a very different mortality rate.

yeah, strikes me as odd too. ok, so it's "just the cold" or "the flu is more deadly and many people don't get the vaccine," but they are only looking at it currently as it is HERE. I'm hoping they are just under reacting in part to counteract the over reacting media? i'm not sure. but i've had several basically just stop me from talking because they are medical professionals and they know what they are talking about. So i did, maybe i don't know what i'm talking about. it just seems like they aren't looking at the future.Originally posted by WARFAB View PostI'm well aware this virus isn't much of a threat to me and my immediate family, but being completely dismissive of it always strikes me as odd. yeah, i totally agree! ok so it hasn't killed as many people as the flu YET! no kidding, it isn't everywhere YET!Originally posted by WARFAB View PostI've seen posts from one PA I know where she compares the number of people killed by the flu last year with the number of people killed by the coronavirus. This is interesting. Comparing mortality rates to the flu probably doesn't tell anywhere close to the whole story. What are the hospital admission rates? 15% of patients developing acute respiratory distress seems like it's probably a bit more serious than the flu.

The US fatality rate will likely be lower than the global average because we have a solid healthcare system. But if 15% of the people who get it will require hospitalization, I'm guessing that will put a bit of a strain on the system. No clue what percentage of flu patients require hospitalization, but I have a hard time believing it's as high as 15%.- Day 8: At this point, patients with severe cases (15%, according to the Chinese CDC) develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, an illness that occurs when fluid builds up the lungs. ARDS is often fatal.
- Day 10: If patients have worsening symptoms, this is the time in the disease's progression when they're most likely to be admitted to the ICU. These patients probably have more abdominal pain and appetite loss than patients with milder cases. Only a small fraction die: The current fatality rate hovers at about 2%.

I was hanging out at urgent care last night for a few hours so I talk to the doctors and nurses about corona and they basically started laughing. They said it’s a virus just like the flu nothing more. And they said about the 8000 deaths that they’re all pretty much happening in Third World countries where they don’t have the medical treatment that we do in there in overcrowded conditions thereShe wants to be your belly gun

The virus has given China a perfect excuse to run a cruel social experiment on millions of people. How? They're doing it with SMARTphones and a code inserted...sic semper boogaloo

On a somewhat related note; it would appear as though the ZeroHedge Twitter account has been shut down.It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

That's how I heard of it first. Has there been a general announcement of how procedures are going to be different under the SOE or are we just supposed to guess? If there was an announcement with instructions I missed it.Originally posted by big flash View Postthe RPO decided to cancel/postpone all shows at Kodak Theater for next month plus due to the apparent "SOE"
Seems like they should have done it by county. Right now all the confirmed cases seem to be downstate. Declaring a SOE for the entire state based on what's going on downstate just perpetuates the political funk between downstate and upstate. Not only do we have to take downstate's trash (and potentially sewage), but we also have to stop doing things because the people living 5 hours away should?
On the flip side, I suppose I could interpret this as Cuomo being more concerned about upstate. If this bug is as bad as the fearmongers suggest, downstate is already screwed and it makes more sense to limit big social gatherings BEFORE you've got community spreading, not after.

Cuomo is deploying the National Guard. Looks like they're trying to minimize travel in New Rochelle for 2 weeks and are closing schools for that time period.
Is New Yorkistan the first state to deploy the National Guard to battle Corona?
Guessing toilet paper is going to get really hard to find in most places.
