  • Coronavirus Prepping

With areas of China on lockdown and the Coronavirus sure to start taking off in the US sooner or later, it occurred to me that I should start looking into some food storage. There have been pictures circulating of Chinese grocery stores stripped bare, and I'm guessing things are only going to get worse before they get better. It will be interesting to see whether the virus has the same effect on caucasians, but I'd rather be ahead of the curve than behind it on this. It's not like we don't have advanced warning this is coming, regardless of how severely it hits the US.

So who's on top of the prepping food supply situation? I'm thinking stuff like.....

    - Pasta/Canned Sauces
    - Canned Goods
    - Juice Mixes
    - Sugar/Salt/Flour
    - Jerky
    - Oats
    - Bisquick

What other items should I be looking into?

So the CDC is telling everyone to prepare for some disruptions.

        https://www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...-says-n1142556

Top U.S. public health officials said Tuesday that Americans should prepare for the spread of the coronavirus in communities across the country.

"It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the head of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said during a media briefing Tuesday.
In a news conference later Tuesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said: "The immediate risk to the general American public remains low. But, as we have warned, that has the potential to change quickly.
Based on what I've read, this virus is highly contagious because it has a very long incubation period (up to 30 days) where people are often asymptomatic and can still transmit the virus. Plus, the virus can survive for a decent amount of time one open surfaces. So odds are, the infection situation in the US is already substantially worse than the numbers indicate.

The average person doesn't have the resources (financial or material) to become a hermit for the next 9 months until the come up with a vaccine. So odds are, most people are going to get it. Hopefully the people downplaying its severity are correct and it's not much worse than a typical flu.

That said, it probably still makes sense to prepare for supply chain disruptions. I change the title of this thread for people to start posting prep suggestions. If things get bad, we could even start sharing where supplies are still available.

I'm adding TP to my list of supplies I'm going to stock up on. It doesn't go bad, and even if this virus ends up being a non-event, our family will end up using it anyways.

I was looking at some of my usual long term food suppliers websites the other night after the CDC announcement (because I dont have much yet at all) and you could basically watch things go out of stock. So this is already having an effect. Wish that stuff wasn't quite so expensive, was hoping to add some #10 cans of some stuff to the pile.

Some things I'd add to your list though:
          cereals (my kid eats lots)
          fever reducing meds- tylenol etc
Rice and beans - actually inexpensive so something I already have
          Bleach

I purchase Pool Shock, it's a lot more potent, and can be diluted

His summary of what is known about the Coronavirus is pretty much what I've read. A couple things he didn't mention:

            - The coronavirus is more lethal for men than women. I don't remember the exact percentages.

            - Unlike the flu, the coronavirus doesn't seem to be as big a threat to children. There don't seem to be any confirmed reports of kids under 9 dying, and kids don't seem to be showing symptoms as severely as adults. As a parent with three young kids at home, I was encouraged to hear this

First US death from coronavirus in Washington state.

The US announced its first death from the coronavirus earlier today -- a Washington state man aged in his 50s with underlying health conditions.

The same New Yorkistan inmates who can't make license plates that last, are now making hand sanitizer.

Cuomo made the announcement at a press conference, where he unveiled the product, dubbed NYS Clean, from behind black curtains.

"We are introducing New York State Clean hand sanitizer, made conveniently by the State of New York," he said while holding a bottle. Cuomo described it a "superior product to products now on the market," citing its higher alcohol content than what's found in competitors like Purell.

"It has a very nice floral bouquet," Cuomo added of the scent, describing it as a mix of lilacs, hydrangea and tulips.

The hand sanitizer is now in production, and Cuomo said that it will be distributed to New Rochelle, as it is a "significant hotspot."

The sanitizer is being developed by Corcraft, a "brand" that is produced by the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It uses inmates at correctional facilities throughout New York for low-cost labor.
                What could possibly go wrong?

people still are saying "what's the big deal, this virus isn't effecting us?"
yeah, yeah it is. the virus itself might not be "that big of a deal" to us right now, but man it sure is effecting us and it's just the beginning here.

I have an old hs friend living in Italy that is under what I would consider a light quarantine. I've been keeping in touch with her because i'm worried about her and her family but also because whatever they are doing there is probably heading this way. they are generally confined to their homes, however a representative is allowed to go to the store from the house during certain times, they are somehow regulating it so that there aren't too big of crowds at the stores and very few people out and about.

NYS also just announce school closing protocols :

"Cuomo also announced the beginning of a protocol to determine how to react if a school student, teacher or staff member tests positive. Cuomo said if a school student contracts COVID-19, that school will automatically close for 24 hours. That will allow health and education officials to assess what to do next, he said."

Our decision to not start our oldest in kindergarten until this fall looks prescient. No idea how much better things will be by fall, but this school year is about to get seriously disrupted.

We've suddenly got an "all hands meeting" scheduled for 3:00 today at work. Should be interesting.

Last I heard only about 50% of our staff are set up to work remotely. No idea how fast that can change.

UofR has taken the stance that anyone that's been exposed to it is required to take a 14 day quarantine. With current HIPAA laws, they can't require any proof of exposure. I'm really tempted to take a 2 week vacation.
