  • walk from Henrietta to Lockport, anyone?

Anyone interested in a walk from Rochester to Lockport?
Following the canal path so there is no need for navigation.
I am looking mid May when the days are much longer.
The idea is to leave very early in the morning like 5AM and reach before midnight.
There will be breaks for resting and stretching but with an aggressive goal.
We will have a minivan and driver available to return and for pickup those who cannot make it all the way.
Just bring a small backup with the essentials or a great time to test BOB and clothing/gear to test yourself.
Anyone who wants to do it need to have some good walking shoes and start walking every day ASAP unless you are
already a long distance runner or very fit for sports. Walking this long it will take the best of anyone and specially us who are no kids anymore.
I am walking almost every day and increasing progressively.
Anyone who wants to try some loops around the area are welcome.
If you want to make it a tad shorter I am open to suggestions but I think it is doable.
Might want to invest in some nice socks and tights for underwear clothing unless you are big bird, then don't worry. lol

Any interest from the prepping guys or anyone who likes to take on a beautiful walk across upstate?

It is all w/o any competition or BS and trying to accommodate everyone, all fun stuff.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Looks like it is a little over 60 miles. Might be a bit ambitious if it is. A few years ago I had a marked and measured trail through the desert that I would hike for exercise. It was 6 miles and I did it in 1.5 hours. That is about as fast as I can walk without breaking into a jog. And I am very long legged. After four miles an hour average for 6 continuous miles I definitely was aware of the workout. ( of course I am an old guy ). The difference between 3.5 MPH and 4.0 MPH is VERY noticeable. Not like the difference from 3.0 MPH to 3.5 MPH. A 15 hour day would require around 4.3 MPH!! And that would be a continuous no stop forced march.
My walking has been curtailed greatly by the onset of AFib. However, I am in hopes of getting that corrected. If things work out OK for me after the procedure I would be interested in some sort of a get together and trek, for sure. Not sure about over 60 miles in a 15 hour period though.
        Keep this updated Maketrefe.

I volunteered as a hiking merit badge counselor and am dreading the three 10-mile, one 15-mile and one 20-mile hikes, LOL. Good luck with 60!

canal path isn't exactly hiking. but still 4+ mph for 15 hours is going to be pretty rough.
i might be down. i need some motivation

20 years ago I could have done this, since I could run a marathon (26 miles) in under 3 hours.

              Today? Fuggedaboudit.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I could have been enjoying his nuts.

4mph is VERY aggressive....back there in Air Assault School we had to 'road march' holding 4mph for just 12 miles in three hours, and I was wasted...and 21 at the time. That was with a (maybe) 30lbs ruck, helmet, boots, all the LCE (errr...that's pre-MOLLE) gear and carrying a 'rubber duck' rifle (a training aid looking and weighing exactly what an M16 was, but no worries about accountability for the weapon).

I accomplished this task by jogging to the next telephone pole, and then walking (resting) to the next. 2hrs 44min.

Kinda reminds me of the time we rucked down, across and up the far side of the Grand Canyon in three days (~24 miles, iirc)....in August (not one of our brightest ideas)

I did marathons back in the day. I cannot run anymore and even if I could I would still walk. It is easier and enjoy it more.

                  Here are the options:

Starting from Genesee valley park is 60.2 miles precisely.
Starting from Greece canal park is 52.4 miles avoiding going all around the city.
Leaving from Brokport's Corvertt park is 41 miles although that is not Rochester anymore. I prefer Greece canal park from the west side and that makes it a less agressive with a 3.8mph/15hr schedule.

4mph is doable in flat terrain and without gear or light load. if we lower to 3.8 still is round 13.7 hours just the walking w/o including the brakes.
This will give time for lunch and bio brakes. By taking out 2hrs and a faster pace it should be more friendly for more people starting in the west side /Greece.

At a later date in June we will be doing another one by bicycle but from Pitssford that is 69 miles. On this one we are planning time for dinner over in lockport.
Still I have to arrange for a trailer because if we have more than 2 or 3 bicycles the minivan alone will not work. Or stay in Buffalo for the night and and
then come back next day. We will see.

Still on the planning phases so I am open to suggestions.

Any given weekend if one wants to do a 18-20 mile I have a nice circuit starting at Cobs hill going down winton and westfall to the canal and then around the
canal to pitssford. From there we go up french road and come back behind the oakhill country club that has a nice path close to my house that used to
be an old rail road. It literally runs around the back of the club, pittsford plaza and all backyards up allens creek and up and from there we come back to cobbs hill
through the back and finalize going back around cobs hill park, monroe av. and up to the hill where we can leave the cars there.
This is something we can do in the morning and then have a brunch over there or by Liberty's at winton rd to replenish. lol
I do this as often as I can so let me know if you are up for a 18-20 mile prepping hike. We can do a tad shorter too. Weather permitting obviously that now with the snow gone
                  is a lot easier.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Mek - with all due respect, look up times for ultramarathons. Back when I was fit I did 50 miles in 14 hours. There was a LOT of running. I haven't run ultras in 8 years and have done nothing but get fat since then. Look up my buddy Sam Pasceri. He used to host a winter 100 miler along the canal path. If we could do an overnigjt, I'd be down with a weekend event.

This is nothing like that. There is nobody breathing down anyone necks. we are not 18 anymore anyway. well at least some of us.
4mph is a fast pace or not depending on ones legs. I do 4mph for 10 miles no issues but then next I migh come down to 3.7 or 3.8.
Hard to say, I don't really worry. I just walk and pace myself. Weight is a big no no. One thing I learn walking the way to Santiago (north of Spain) that was roughly a 200 mile walk is that I took
about 45lb-50lb of gear and ruined myself. Never again will carry a tent and so many other useless things.
After that feat I could not wear my loafers for a month! My feet were like two rye loafs of bread from the wegmans bakery! round and flat! lol. ...And this after resting for a few days camping and resting over the Cies Islands and putting the feet in the high tide that is open ocean water temp. Next time I do it I will travel light, very light.
The crazy stuff I used to do in the service will definitely kill me today.

I don't even want to learn more about those things. My brother have been doing the double marathons (iroman type) and other crazy chit like running up 7% hills in Spain, France and Switzerlan mountains, and now he is fit but all ****ed up on the joints. He is 56 you know?
I want the challenge but I am in no rush to get anywhere and if it hurts I stop. I mean, this doesn't mean is not doable or cannot we push a bit more every time but the goal is to
simply do it and have fun. no strings, no superman BS.

The idea here is to be good enough to take long hikes in the mountains and also a BOB and get away from trouble far enough w/o the need of assistance from anyone.
The prepping, the bob and all that is great but perhaps the thing that needs more prepping is the body itself and the mental attitude when faced with tough challenges.
We spend too much time on the office desk and then the stupid internet and not enough outdoors and doing something healthy for both the body and the mind.
So all that while we have some fun w/o going all competitive and BS like that.

I am with you there. I like to go places to have fun and come back home with the same nr. of holes and members as I had when I left the house.
I hate those "popular" events. Large cities are the modern version of large sanatoriums for all sort of crazies.
