  • Automatic water shut-off Q and A

Seem there may be some interest in automatically shutting off water in house when a leak is detected.

This is the actual unit that shuts off my water.

I found if you properly align everything I don't have any issues with it not being powerful enough as some have complained in reviews.

In order to get something like this to work you need a water detector that works with whatever zwave controller you use.

For example I have a lynx 7000 panel with z wave controller. I set up a scene that shuts off water. Then I created a rule that says if I get a water alarm run my flood scene which closes valve.

Now you can use other zwave controllers like smarthings for example instead of a lynx 7000 in my example.

I remember as a kid being down in SC with my dad when he got a call that basement was leaking water. It was actually coming from sprinkler system outside of house. One of the solenoids busted and water was pouring out. He put a solenoid onto main feeder for sprinkler system that shut off when system was not active (normally closed). This was back in late 70s. No wifi or computers but I guess you could say he was ahead of his time, LOL...

      Definitely sounds like he was!

You can even use these for gas shut off depending on shut-off valve you have.

It really is amazing though that such a small investment can save you tons of money in damage .

For those with Honeywell systems the great thing about the wireless water detector is that it doubles as a temperature sensor so it's two sensors for price of one!

I don't now but could easily use a uninterrupted power supply for the valve shut off since my main panel has a back up battery already. A lot of the smart hubs have back up batteries built in as well.
