  • What archery equipment do you own/use?

I figured I'd ask and see how much work is ahead of me to make this section worth it's existence. LOL What bows do you own? What arrows do you use? What broadheads do you hunt with? Let us know and post some pics if ya want!!

I personally have a few bows here that are mainly for display and some for use. I have a couple of older Darton bows that are for display but I will take them out and shoot them once in awhile. I mainly use my PSE X-Force HF6 and my Parker Frontier for hunting. The PSE is basically the speed bow in the stable. It has hit 345fps with a 346gr arrow. It's not a forgiving bow though and since I'm not really all that concerned with blazing speeds anymore, it's actually taken a back seat to the Parker for hunting. The Parker Frontier I have now, I really don't know what it's true speed is as I haven't shot it through a chronograph to see what it will do with that same arrow. I did get 272fps using an arrow which I believe was 450gr or there about which that's a good weight for a hunting arrow and a speed I can live with anyways. I'll take some pics of both bows soon. I also use various arrows. I have Victory Archery Products (VAP) V-Force arrows that are custom cut to 27.5" which of course give me more speed. I have Gold Tip hunter arrows that I use for big game hunting and I also have the $3 Allen arrows from Wally World that I use for small game hunting and messing around when I think there's a good chance I'll be losing or breaking an arrow that day. LOL They actually fly pretty damn good for an inexpensive arrow and they group really well too. IF YOU decide to buy some, I have alittle advice for you ... file down the inside of the nock where the string is inserted. The nocks provided on the $3 Allen arrows are VERY tight fitting on the string and sometimes will actually stay on the string after the arrow has been launched!! I don't really care much about it because a small flat file and a few seconds takes care of the issue BUT I figure it's best to give y'all a heads up on what I've found with those cheaper arrows.

I've wanted to get into archery for a long time. Unfortunately my back issues have derailed that plan.
I do have one Barnett handheld crossbow though. I believe it shoots 6" bolts.

I have a Hoyt Raider from back around 1994. I couldn't tell you much more than that. It's been a couple years since I've even touched it.

My father picked up a Fred Bear Odyssey at a garage sale for my one niece who is interested in archery. I had a junior compound bow when I was a kid, but it had been decades since I've looked at bows. After seeing how cool the Odyssey is, I've been perusing the bows at Field and Stream and looking online. There are some really freaking cool bows these days. If I win the lottery, a sweet compound bow will be on my shopping list.

I shoot an Oneida Black Eagle set at 68#'s, I am one of those guys that likes what I like and have always owned Oneida bows. Uncle Ted used to shoot one without sights, but has since changed brands. I still shoot big old Easton aluminum arrows with a Thunderhead 100 grain broad head. Been meaning to switch to carbon arrows but I still have a bunch of aluminum arrows that are straight so it's hard to justify spending the money for new arrows.

Thanks GooseGun. That jogged the memory, I shoot GameGetter II's with 100gr broadheads (nothing special)

It really doesn't matter what you shoot or prefer because in reality, all of the bows mentioned have all killed big game, small game and fish!! They'll do today what they did back when. The only real difference nowadays is that the bows are lighter and faster in general. Other than that .... you all own some deadly bows!!

Somewhat off topic question and I'm too lazy to look it up... is there a minimum draw weight for bow hunting in NYS?

The last time I used a bow of any consequence was back about 1975 in summer camp. I still have my badges, though I probably don't deserve them anymore, as I probably can't hit the broad side of a barn now.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I could have been enjoying his nuts.

35lbs my good man. This is from the NYS DEC website .... The top requirement is for bows and the bottom is for crossbows.

Long (stick), recurve or compound bow with a draw weight in excess of 35 pounds. A legal arrowhead is non-barbed, has 2 or more cutting edges and is at least 7/8 inches wide.
Consists of a bow, a string, and either compound or recurve limbs with minimum width of 17 inches (tip of limbs, uncocked), mounted on a stock. The stock shall have a trigger with a working safety that holds the string and limbs under tension until released. It shall have a minimum overall length from the butt of the stock to the front of the limbs of 24 inches and be able to launch a minimum 14 inch arrow/bolt, not including the legal arrowhead. It shall have a draw weight of 100 to 200 pounds.
