So am 90% sure I'm getting canoe and going to buy it today or tomorrow assuming they will hold onto it for me until next week when I get my roof rack to bring it home
www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!

You could get the cheap foam pads as a temporary transporter until the racks show up.
Old enough to know better, still too young to care

That's true, do I need something like this for rack as well since I have decided I am going with canoe now?

Cheap and does the trick, until your Thule arrives.

Instead of the yellow rope I use four wratcheting tiedowns.

I have a nice 14 foot fishing kayak with paddle, Heritage Angler, has two built in Rod holders.
The long they are the better they track, better glide, may or may not be better in the wind and are easier to paddle. I'm selling because I bought Hornbeck solo canoes, 18 lbs @ 12 foot long.
I must say I love beavers.

You can get them, but they're not necessary. When tieing the boat on, just make sure the ropes/ratchets are as close to the gunnels as possible. That'll hold the boat steady, and it won't move. That's how we always tied canoes to the trailer in scouts.

I will say, these are awesome for securing the bow and stern. http://www.amazon.com/Malone-Sentry-...CZ1PAH8JCRPZN5

What types of straps do I need, how long, wide?

I would personally go with either plain ol' rope, or standard cam lock tie downs. Ratchets will allow you to tighten it too much.

These hold the boat steady front and back, but what you need is something to hold the canoe onto the rack/car side to side.

That's why you tie it down with the straps/rope up against the gunnels. It locks it right down and it won't move.
