So I had a crazy dream the other night where I was in some type of Hurricane Katrina scenario and had to leave the homestead for parts unknown. The problem I had was trying to figure out what to take as far as firearm(s) and ammo.
Pistol:
- take the 22 semi-auto? I can carry a LOT of 22 ammo.
- take a 9mm and some standard cap mags that I may or may not have access to? I can't haul as much ammo, maybe a half dozen loaded mags but probably could "find" some as needed during my travels.
- take a full-size 45? Ammo is really heavy, again I could probably "find" more as needed.
Long gun:
- Marlin 795? (I can carry a LOT of 22 ammo and I'm a pretty damn good shot with it)
- SKS? Semi auto and the Chinese chest rigs allows me to carry 200+ rounds comfortably but 7.62 ball tends to make clean holes in soft target as opposed to debilitating wounds.
- Mosin? I could grab one of the carbines but ammo is heavy and it's a 5 round bolt gun.
- Garand? Semi auto 8 round, great stand-off gun, AP to deter the MRAPS and bullet proof vests but gun and ammo is heavy
- AR? Unblock the 10/30 mags for decent capacity, ammo is lighter that the others already mentioned and I would be likely to "find" more as needed
- 12ga pump SG? The most versatile choice (I'm good with slugs out to 100 yards no problem and 00 buck at close range is devastating) but ammo is fvcking heavy! OTOH, very likely to be able to "find" more as needed.
I think I would holster up the 9mm and as many mags as I could carry because the 45 ammo is too damn heavy and the 22 requires excellent shot placement at close-quarter distances to provide stopping power. I thought about grabbing a couple of bricks of 22 and slinging the Marlin 795 over my shoulder to have as my long-term/stand-off gun because the ammo is so easy to carry but the AR is higher capacity and ammo would likely be more available if needed. If possible, I would probably also grab a handful of 00 and carry the Mossy 590 in case I had to shoot my way out of the city knowing full well that it would probably be the first thing discarded if I needed to lighten the load/pick up the pace.
SO........the water is rising, the vehicles are already useless (water-damaged and there isn't any chance for refuelling in the foreseeable future anyway), and you have an hour to grab what you can carry and GTFO. You can probably manage one or more handguns and one long gun.......what's it gonna be and why?
