  • Natural disaster and firearms

So I had a crazy dream the other night where I was in some type of Hurricane Katrina scenario and had to leave the homestead for parts unknown. The problem I had was trying to figure out what to take as far as firearm(s) and ammo.

    Pistol:
    - take the 22 semi-auto? I can carry a LOT of 22 ammo.
    - take a 9mm and some standard cap mags that I may or may not have access to? I can't haul as much ammo, maybe a half dozen loaded mags but probably could "find" some as needed during my travels.
    - take a full-size 45? Ammo is really heavy, again I could probably "find" more as needed.

    Long gun:
    - Marlin 795? (I can carry a LOT of 22 ammo and I'm a pretty damn good shot with it)
    - SKS? Semi auto and the Chinese chest rigs allows me to carry 200+ rounds comfortably but 7.62 ball tends to make clean holes in soft target as opposed to debilitating wounds.
    - Mosin? I could grab one of the carbines but ammo is heavy and it's a 5 round bolt gun.
    - Garand? Semi auto 8 round, great stand-off gun, AP to deter the MRAPS and bullet proof vests but gun and ammo is heavy
    - AR? Unblock the 10/30 mags for decent capacity, ammo is lighter that the others already mentioned and I would be likely to "find" more as needed
    - 12ga pump SG? The most versatile choice (I'm good with slugs out to 100 yards no problem and 00 buck at close range is devastating) but ammo is fvcking heavy! OTOH, very likely to be able to "find" more as needed.

I think I would holster up the 9mm and as many mags as I could carry because the 45 ammo is too damn heavy and the 22 requires excellent shot placement at close-quarter distances to provide stopping power. I thought about grabbing a couple of bricks of 22 and slinging the Marlin 795 over my shoulder to have as my long-term/stand-off gun because the ammo is so easy to carry but the AR is higher capacity and ammo would likely be more available if needed. If possible, I would probably also grab a handful of 00 and carry the Mossy 590 in case I had to shoot my way out of the city knowing full well that it would probably be the first thing discarded if I needed to lighten the load/pick up the pace.

SO........the water is rising, the vehicles are already useless (water-damaged and there isn't any chance for refuelling in the foreseeable future anyway), and you have an hour to grab what you can carry and GTFO. You can probably manage one or more handguns and one long gun.......what's it gonna be and why?
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

    I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

308 Bolt gun or scoped M1A if I didn't ship it to my brother in a free state, accurate, reach and sufficient for up to Elk, and Moose with in reasonable distance and shot placement, excellent self defense weapon as well, ammo is on hand, both FMJ and SP, manageable recoil for the wife.

357 S&W wheel gun, simple, accurate, self defense and hunting up to deer size game, manageable recoil for even smaller framed shooters, wife and daughter although they shoot the 1911's as well, just more versatile in this situation.

.22 cal rifle for small game as more widely disbursed than big game, kill. cook and move.
I must say I love beavers.

I am going to use simple common sense:

Short term, urban and suburban situations survival even fighting: 5.56, 9mm and 12ga. with 5.56 and a short rifle one can carry lots of firepower in excess of 8 full mags and extra 800 rounds.

Long term, perhaps in the woods in survival true SHTF for the long haul: 22LR, 410, 9mm, 5.56 and 12 ga. ....in the long long long term perhaps a few straight wall cartriges with a punch that can take black powder. 44 mag could be great but also 357 mag and even 9mm in an emergency. The 45 acp and 40 cal the same.

Reserve the 308 and other high power long range cartridges for those situations where it is required.

Remember any service round is going to be plentiful whether it is in ammo form or components. At least one firearm with 5.56/223, 308w, 9mm and 12ga should be in every home.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

When we lived in Oklahoma I would run a drill in my head every tornado season. In 5 minutes what could I grab to put in the space under the stairs with us. Water, important documents, firearms, a few sentimental photos, water, flashlights etc. They've gotten pretty good about predicting when it's gonna be a bad weather day so some stuff I would pre-stage just in case. But, given the scenario of what can you fit in a small space along with two grown people and pets really makes you think! I had room for my S&W .40 with two mags loaded and a box of 50 rounds. The Mossy didn't make the cut due to lack of room.

Don't miss those days at all, lol! Luckily we never got hit but came damn close a few times!
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

Ok I'll play. First critical assumption I'll make is that I have the whole family here - that makes us 5 and a small squad or team. This would allow each of us to play a diff role and carry different load outs. On foot for an unknown period of time makes weight a critical factor.

First everyone gets a sidearm - a couple of 9mm, a .357, a 22lr and a 45acp. This way we carry a minimum of 100 rds each plus extra 22. Allows us to be covered for major calibers we may find on the way.

Long guns could be more difficult to figure. Certainly 1 or 2 22lr and I'm thinking Saiga or SKS in 7.62x39. Stone cold reliable and ammo for either everywhere. Great multipurpose defense and hunting from CQB to a couple hundred yards. A Mosin would never fail you but too heavy including ammo plus only 5 rd bolt. Shottie would be difficult just by weight of ammo.

Just my $0.02 pff the top of my head.
Ok I can go a couple ways

well i don't own my ideal loadout for such an event thanks to nys laws and my low budget for firearms. Since i like to fantasize, if i could go on a shopping spree and lived in a free state I would get the following for this type of an event:

Me: an accurate 16" DI 223 wylde AR with standard mags and a solid 1-4+ scope, can and light. Sidearm would be a glock 17 with light.
Wife: takedown 10/22 with bx25s, red dot, can and light. tucked in her ruck so she can better take care of our youngen. Sidearm would be a glock 19 with light.

Weight is of great concern, i would not roll with anything larger than intermediate cartridges on foot, and 12 gauge is out. if i could take a vehicle then my shopping list would probably include a SCAR-H or a NEMO 300wm

No pistols, but it would be something common if i had one. Glock or similar. AR 15, mags, ammo, .22lr conversion kit in the pack.
                Athiest. Because... science

For when the S truly HTF. Dang.

So based on the conversation we're talking about a bit more than just a typical natural disaster? Even in Katrina my main concern would have been to get out of dodge to a place that is stable. Firearms concerns would only have been what would help me get out of dodge... and what I wanted to preserve.

Think about it as Katrina but there there will be no place "stable" within 500 miles for the next 3-6 months.
