  • Training Questions

Ok, so I want to get serious about getting my PP here in Dutchess. I would also like to do some training. Are there classes available that don't require handling a pistol that would be beneficial since legally I can't touch a pistol without the state's "permission"?

I ask because I'd like to submit some form of training with my paperwork to prove I can operate a pistol safely. The previous sentence may sound silly bit I have a visual disability (nothing too major) but I'm sure it will come up during the BGC or probably even just submitting the paperwork.

Also, one time I overheard one of my wife's friends ask her if I should even be allowed to own a gun because my vision ain't perfect.

Heard a similar comment from lots of people not about guns but about my profession. The eye doctor I had as a kid was blown away and dumbfounded when he discovered I work in video production and can shoot video without issue, lol!

Anyway, that's my reasoning for asking.

Quick edit: I've shot many pistols when I lived in other states so I'm no stranger to them. Just rusty, lol!

I'm not finding anything similar in Dutchess, but the Monroe County Sheriffs office offers a free 4 hour safety class to anyone who signs up on a regular basis. I took it here before I submitted my CCW application. A lot of basic remediation on safe handling for the first half. The second was largely legalities and when you're justified to use deadly physical force. I wonder if any of the surrounding counties near you offer something similar?

I think you can take pistol training in PA or CT without a pistol license but not sure. I'd probably recommend NRA basic pistol. Believe you can take NRA Basic Pistol in NYS without the pistol handling part before you get your license and then follow up with the range time after permit is issued. If you really want some good training wait til you get your permit then sign up for MDTS Pistol I when Chris Fry comes back to New Paltz. I think he usually does at least one course a year in New Paltz. Great class.

I remember you mentioning him before CG. Some other folks said he was good as well.

I also really need to dust off my pellet/bb guns and make use of my basement range, lol!

I'll second the recommendation for Chris Fry with MDTS. I took a pistol class this past summer with Chris along with thughes. Top notch. I'm signed up for a shotgun class with Chris in Nov when he comes back this way.

Classes usually run about $100 correct? Or does it vary?

I've taken combative pistol, carbine and shotgun with Chris (pistol several times). Also taken a medical trauma class that he hosted. Want to take some low light and knife classes as well. Signed up for some different classes and had to bail a couple times. Every class I've taken has been top notch. I've taken classes with other instructors and Chris is hands down the best in my experience. Highly recommended.

Ok, the shotgun class I could do! What do you learn in that?

Varies and can be significantly more if you throw in cost of ammo (which is usually up to you anyway). I think Fry's classes are generally $180-$200 for eight hours but ammo is on top of that and he makes you got through ALOT of ammo LOL. So $450-$500 isn't out of the question factoring in the course, ammo, gas & meals. Worth every penny.
