  • M855, Why?

They have stopped the ban for now. But why would you use M855 over any other 556 cartridge? Why would you own M855 for any reason besides the steel penetrator. I am not trying to get political here. I don't shoot 223/556 so I dont understand the particulars.

I had similar thoughts. But really, I think M855 is on its way to becoming obsolete since the military is moving away from it.

It was designed to penetrate at long distances which makes it suck at shorter distances that the typical M16/carbine is used at.
Old enough to know better, still too young to care

Backdoor way to use an obscure technicality applicable to handguns to ban the most popular rifle cartridge in America. One of them anyway. First steel penetrator then copper jacketed lead etc. Cant ban the guns ban the ammo that feeds them.

I've not fired it myself, but I haven't heard anything good about it. For awhile it was some of the only 5.56 available, so I get the reason for buying it then. But, it's not less expensive than ball when both are available, so the enhanced penetration has got to be the only benefit. That, and maybe some people have fast twist rifles that don't work well with 55's.

It has nothing to do with the penetrator and everything to do with the agenda.

Availability? Also.because why not? Different strokes for different folks?

Some scopes are specifically designed for that round as well that have built in drop compensators.

I'm on a phone and scanned quickly. I though OP said why are they trying to ban not why would you use. I think I have several cans of green tip and didn't even know they were steel tip lol....

The most common answer is "it is cheap in bulk deals".
As you described it is a great penetrator but it has been already retired from service. And there are other commercial ammunition on the 62-70gr much better no matter what purpose that
match or even excel vs. existing service ammo both in penetration but also through hard barriers. One of the reasons the green tip became so famous was due to its improved capability
to got through thick metals where the AK-47 round fails to penetrate thus their appeal to be used as car stoppers. But then in the last 15 years as auto glass got harder and thicker and also
at shallow angles this round started to show deflection. So that is why the new service ammo.
But for serious ammo one could find the SOST (current service from marines) or 62gr TSX liek corbon or double tap taht will do better than the green tip. Even the Winchester 64gr pp is
a favorite among patrol rifles due to the stoutness and how well it performs both in humans and deer.

So the craze is about cheap bulk surplus ammo and "leave our ammo" alone that is also a good argument. At least the western ammo is not corrosive unlike some of the russian garbage.

                      I hope this helps.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

It's been one of the cheaper, more readily available cartridges in 5.56 for a while since before the online ammo sales "halted' in NY. I used to buy 1,000 round cases for $400 shipped online. 40 cents a round is reasonable. I'm seeing the same 62 gr green tip going for twice that right now. Ridiculous.

The whole thing is a sham and just highlights the ridiculousness and complexity of American firearm laws.
