so my question is, how do I improve upon the factory Hogue overmolded stock on my Remington 700? As it stands now when I load the bipod the forend is touching the barrel and I know that this will lead too inconsistent groups. I've done some light reading and most people say throw this thing out and buy an HS Precision, McMillan, Bell and Carlson, etc... well that is not in the budget, and I just ordered a decent quality optic in a vortex Viper 6.5-20x 50 mm mil dot reticle. So, for now, id like to try reinforcing the thing. Ive heard of people shimming, epoxing dowels, etc... whats your take on how to work with what i have.

I think the hogue is the biggest disappointment of the SPS because it feels so nice to the touch. Warm, positive grip, compact, ... but then it suffers from serious ED. LOL.
I have a procedure that I found the only thing that works other than trashing the whole thing. They actually make the same with a bull aluminum squeleton but then it gets into
the $ department where one should consider the awesome and affordable B&C medalist.
Let me pull out the entire procedure I have with pictures and post it. ...stay connected...It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

sounds good man, I'm looking forward to it. My model is the 700 AAC - SD with1:10 twist barrel.
the hogue stock does have a great feel to it and I love the size, but it has ed just like you said.
also what are your thoughts on installing a brake on a 308 bolt action?

With a 20" barrel and semi-heavy rifle a good brake is a welcome addition. No need to spend a fortune. A short stubby brake with dual baffles and lots of bleeding. It will be loud but this noise will be equally proportional
to the reduced recoil and will help you drive the rifle and stay on target. Stay away from fancy brakes with impossible bleediing patters and tacticool useless stuff people buy all the
time, some even very expensive but garbage. It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Celt I have seen some people try to make the SPS stock more ridged by cutting a channel in the bottom side of the stock then putting a picatinny rail (8 or 10 inch ) with some posts (extending into the barrel channel) in the bottom then filling the barrel channel with fiberglass. I have not tried it but some claim it works well. The up side to this modification is you can use the rail to mount a bipod or any other tacticool thing you want.

I just read a good article about brakes and the 16 dollar amazon.com brake had great results over the 100 dollar brakes. Now that was for 556 rifles, but im guessing the comparative brake for a 308 would do just as well.

Heres the 308 brake ill probably grab.

90% of the brakes on that article fall into the garbage/unecessary category. The DPMS mikulek is a simple break with great value. The JP is also very efficient, probably the most efficient but nobody wants the muzzle to look like a howitzer. decent ones are the hollands quick discharge, and I would go for the lightest possible mass shorter with two baffles only vs. 3 baffle system.
I have tested hundred of brakes, some I cut and design, some popular ones and even some expensive ones and always come back tot he same conclusion like the military has done after decades of research on muzzle brakes. Short, light, plenty of bleeding with clear defined bleeding pattern are the best.
I will give you some options with the stock diy fix. Let me finish work for the day and I will come back here.
