  • buddy's first long gun

so i have a friend that finally is thinking about his first gun. really my only friend at this point in my life that doesn't already have a gun safe with a few he isn't planning on getting his pistol permit any time soon.

anyway, he asked the usual "what gun should I get?" and naturally everyone said in unison: "get a shotgun for your first gun"
but i got thinking about it, i don't know if I really agree with this anymore. don't get me wrong, i love shotguns and think every able body adult should have one.
BUT, the more I think about it, i think if you are only going to have one gun and you aren't planning to hunt, i'd think something like an AR would be the way to go. doesn't have to be semi-auto if they are trying to save some money but still.

a relatively cheap caliber, serviceable, mag fed, can add optics, light and sling. fun to take to the range, not too expensive to plink with, can defend your house and the country. What says the congregation?

i used to preach .22LR for first gun because they are just fun at the range for the whole family, but they are too one dimensional IMHO if they aren't going to buy another gun.
the last couple family members i have that didn't have guns got their first guns in the last few years. both bought shotguns first but both bought semi-auto 223's pretty soon after.

Yep Ruger PC9. Fun gun to shoot. Only a little recoil than a 22. Pretty cheap ammo. Still can be used for a defensive house gun.
      or
Buy a Saiga in 7.62x39 for $700 from me

The big question: what does he want it for?

Another option in addition to what's been said is something like a Ruger MVP. 5.56/.223 bolt gun that takes AR mags.

Yeah I didnt think about pistol cal carbine for him, a pc9 carbine is my next purchase for my wife.

Totally agree with everything thrown out, sounds like you guys tend to agree that something centerfire over a shotty out of the gate though?

he doesnt really know what he wants it for exactly besides getting his man card and having something for shtf

But answering for him I think wants it for punching holes in paper from time to time, home security, hopefully shooting double date nights with my wife and i

The reason I didn't agree with shotty out of the gate is from personal experience (I went that route for my first long gun): While clays are super addicting and one of the most fun things to do with your clothes on, he'll be limited to slugs at many club ranges if he wants to simply punch paper on the rifle range.

Sounds like a good choice. I always recommend something that's relatively cheap and has little recoil when people ask me about their first gun. If they end up with a Mossberg 500 shooting 1 oz. slugs for a first gun, they seem to lose interest before the first box of ammo is gone.

                  My two cents,

                  M1!

                  Glorious
                  Beautiful
                  Historical
Simple to maintain, shoots better when dirty
                  Light recoil with gas system
                  Great plinker
Can defend the neighborhood to 1000 yards when SHTF

The PC carbine would not be my first choice but if he has the same pistol caliber and same magazines there is a reason for it.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

do tell Meke! He hasn't bought anything (probably will be buying this spring), so nothing is in stone yet.

If he has the pistol and same mag then the pc9 might be ok but otherwise I believe a small 223 rifle would be my first choice.
If he wants a gas gun a light and reliable even if it is with that thorsten stock will shoot great.
If he wants a bolt action then perhaps a savage 10 or axis that he can swap barrels and bolt heads for cheap to shoot other short action calibers.

Either one can be bought for the purpose to swap barrels, bolts and/or mags to shoot other calibers including a .410 shotgun.

It is just a matter of deciding in one wants a bolt action long action and/or 308 type AR vs. the 5.56 depending on what other calibers
one has in mind as alternatives.

Going this way makes the firearms more versatile and fun since one doesn't have to buy a new one to enjoy other calibers like shoot on the cheap
but also be able to hunt or have fun with a larger caliber.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance
