I think you would need serial number first then get it on permit then complete build

Can it still begin with FUAC?
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

That may be the ticket. Get the kit with blank, come up with a serial number, add to permit then complete build. Similar to an AR pistol build - have to add lower receiver to license first then take delivery from FFL. I'll see what I can find out. So far I find nothing in NYS Penal law that is applicable to home made.
Ok I can go a couple ways

Just to be clear here gang I'm not advocating creating "ghost guns." Just thought it would be cool to get a kit at such a low price and assemble a 1911 from scratch. Compliance with NYS laws was always in my thinking - just was not overt about it. I know it wouldn't compare to a kimber or Wilson combat but cool diy just the same.

Understood, and agree completely with a DIY gun, even more so if built from a 80% frame. I would love to do it and knew that ATF has no problem with any 80% build (as long as it's for personal use). I believe that NY penal code states that if you find a handgun, you must turn it in to local law enforcement and if no one claims it within "x" number of days you can get it registered to your permit and take ownership. I wonder how much it matters if you "found" it on the workbench in your garage?
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

            I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

It's on my list of "if I had the money and enough spare time" list of things to do. I have a 1911 with some tricked out internals and would love to try adding my own twist. A custom length carbon fiber trigger bow wouldn't be hard to make.

I think in NYS it doesn't necessarily have to have conventional serial number but can have some type of distinguishing mark. I'm sure you could dremmel on your own serial number if you wanted too.

On another note, fit and finish on a 1911 is a very skilled job. To do it properly requires more than pulling up a how to assemble video on you tube. By the time to buy quality internals you could by a quality entry level 1911. It's also going to require a several specialty tools

Agreed. This one comes with everything to complete the pistol so when done would have learned a lot about constructing, finishing and fitting a 1911 without dumping a lot of cash into it. If you butcher it and it becomes nothing more than a paperweight there's always the abolity to convert to cash at next gun buyback program!

I'm thinking back to the discussion a while back about having some custom NYSG guns made. (Or avid arms now)
The price seems decent, although I have no clue what goes into building a 1911.
