  • Need recommendation For IWB For Heavy 1911

Just bringing my Para P12 back on line. Had a frame crack in the rail behind the slide release hole. Used a dremel to cut it away, radiused the cut, smoothed, and shot the snot out of it (200+ rds) - no crack spread - .

It's old (1996), all steel, Wilson Combat tweaked in '97, shots like a bullseye gun.

    But it's heavy - very heavy with 10 + 1 220 gr Critical Duty.

Tried the Alien Gear route - comfortable, but can't do one-handed, no-look reholstering as per my training (MDTS, PFC & southnarc) due to the neoprene backing.

I've always gone with Comp-Tac (the CTAC), even for an XD Service, but open to other suggestions. Think I need to spread the load out.

I use a wide leather belt from The Beltman, so I have to stretch the CTAC C-clips with a heat gun.

    Thanks in advance

I always carried my p14-45 in a Small of Back (SOB) holster. I haven't tried to carry IWB.

Tried SOB with the P12 - not fun while behind the wheel, but then I've had back surgery, and it presses right into the scar.

I like IWB - have used it with an XD Service (4"), my XD 9mm SC, and a Glock 36 (that gun was a handful of greased cat).

I highly recommend a Raven Concealment Phantom Kydex IWB Holster with either their standard or C-Clips. I carry my full size XDm .45 (10+1) in it with ease, and can draw and re-holster it one handed. Here's it in action on my YouTube Channel:

It is ROCK SOLID with the C-Clips on my Uncle Mike's Instructor Belt, which is a wider belt designed for IWB Carry. I'm not sure if it's the exact same width as your leather belt, but Raven does offer different types of clips to accessorize your holster. ;-)

What am I missing? I don't understand this requirement for "one-handed no-look reholstering". There is no prize for being the fastest to reholster and a careless slip has serious implications. After a self-defense shoot there will be no need for a fast reholster and if I'm shooting a tactical match or other competition I'm probably sporting an OWB tactical/combat type holster which allows for easy reholstering.

To the OP, I have an all stainless 1911.....tried N82 (no dice), appendix in leather (no dice), Foxx hybrib IWB (no dice), Aliengear IWB (no dice), Bianchi OWB leather (best solution I found but hard to conceal). The problem I have is that no matter what style or brand holster, the gun is so goddam heavy it ends up tugging my pants down which I find very annoying (even with a quality gun belt...I have no hips). Good luck and let us know what you settle on.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

Looks great - I'm checking it out right now.

                  Thanks.

ETA: Sent them a message if they can make me a custom. I like the look of their stuff.

This was a part of all my training, and in most cases involved transition to another weapon (rifle, edged, hands) without either leaving yourself without a sidearm if the need to use it again occurred (rifle dry or jam) or providing the BG with a nice expedient impact weapon; or in the worse case a usable weapon, if he obtains your mags.

It had nothing to do with prizes, but was all about retaining your weapon while continuing the fight even if, as a last resort, you have to use it as a club. It was a serious part of training for a gun fight, and had nothing to do with competitions. IMHO I trained with some outstanding people - MDTS, PFC and southnarc (ECQC class w/In Extremis knife). At no time were we instructed to just toss your sidearm in the dirt and go to the rifle, edged weapon or H-2-H to "save time". I can visualize a scenario where you might want to just dump the sidearm, but sidearm retention is usually easier if it is holstered, especially for geezers like me.

I could go into specific scenarios if you would like but I doubt you need that, your post shows you are thinking seriuosly about CCW. I also have the same "pants headed South" thing even with my XD 9mm SC, because I wear a back-brace made of slick material. It's a PITA, but it prevents a PITA - literally.

Unfortunately, Raven doesn't make anything for the P12, so I'm searching again. I may be stuck with Comp-Tac and, although that's not bad, it probably won't be optimal.

                    Thanks for your observations.

Good input. I was commenting from the perspective of my envisioned scenarios of a self defense shoot, not a running gun fight. I would never advise tossing a sidearm in the dirt to save time during an active prolonged battle but after I have to shoot the guy that was trying to carjack me, I don't want to have a ND because my shirt got tangled in the trigger while I was rapidly re-holstering without looking. (but you obviously understand that we are talking about 2 different scenarios)

Absolutely agree. If the BG is "no longer a threat" (your BG's MMV), I would remain at low ready, trigger out of triggger guard while I called 5-0.

When 5-0 arrives I would either holster or place the unloaded weapon on the ground. They're probably going to hook you up because of SOP. And, I'd say virtually nothing, unless it contained the word "attorney" or "lawyer".

Mix that in with "I was afraid for my life and those of.............(whoever)."

                            That would be a winner.

Back to the holster thing: I ran my 1911 at the CC shoot Tuesday night using the Bianchi OWB leather.....I forgot how close and tight it holds that gun. I may just start carrying in that rig (as soon as I can find an 8 round mag that feeds reliably!)
