​​​​​​​Go check out this place and talk to the owner http://www.ikkin.net . They do transfers but more importantly they have there own lowers. Unless I misunderstood their lowers work with ALL calibers. If the laws ever change it's also milled so that you could make it auto with proper components.

I don't know about that ...
I had to have special mags for 9mm in a .223 lower, and the .308 mag is much larger than .223

I assume he was probably referring to the "multi-caliber" labeling on many AR lowers which can be used for 5.56, .223, 300 AAC, 7.62 x 39, etc.?

He said it could be used with 223 up to .50 beaowolf . I was just there for a transfer and he showed me one and it looked really nice.

I'm picking up my 2 new lowers tomorrow.

Now, the question...what do I want to do with them??

I already have an 18" stainless barreled upper in 5.56 on a Spike's lower (the whole thing weighs about 10 lbs...it's nuts and really just a bench gun). I'm contemplating building a dedicated .22LR upper that I may put on one (I bought 2 because I have 2 boys...). Maybe a 16" carbine or pistol caliber? Maybe something a bit bigger to deer hunt with...6.5/6.8 (obviously lighter than the 10lb one I have)? I'm not in a huge rush at this point, as I just wanted to get the pieces before things got nuts (and the price was right).

The caliber has nothing to do with the the limitations. It is all about the max length of the round (COAL).
There is also a limitation imposed by the bolt face that when it goes to .470-.480 (308, RAR, 450 bushmaster) then the pressure limit is lower unless you have a special
type of bolt and extension (I have a few of those). So I can shoot the 6mmBR, 6.5BR and such.
Olympic arms has an AR15 size receiver that allows for WSSM cases but that is even a larger bolt and shank and in this case special receiver they sell.
They also sell an AR15 hybrid that can shoot the 308 single stack but this requires a special type of magazine that is yet another proprietrary solution.
for regular magazines AR15 and uppers you can still use the same lower.

Do you reload? If so there are some very cool options. It is more whether you want to reload and have something really unique and perhaps to do more with a lower budget
vs. going one of the traditional routes.
The 22LR is not really a great fit for the AR. The 9mm is and when the 22LR price crisis and availability one could reload 9mm for less cost than some of the 22lr ammo given
one buy bulks components and is ready to reload. One cannot reload 22LR. Another little bugger that is great for a very small carbine is the 5.7fm but this is for reloading
but if you want to use just another 22 then why not 223 or 22fireball that use a regular 223 bolt vs. the 5.7 that is a proprietary bolt.

It all depends if you want to consilidate calibers (Bullets) for going bulk and cost efficient or you want something really different to do anything.
The 35 gunner I designed is possibly the most versatile and powerful cartridge one can get for the AR15 using standard components and brass.

You can keep all you need in a small plastic bin and literally reload in a closet or a kitchen table.
Did you consider the 7.62x39 for cost and perhaps just reload a small batch wiht brass for high performance load.
Ballistically the 6.8 will be hard to be for the type of uses most people need and for a 16 or 18 light upper max.

I haven't really ruled anything out at this point, although I would like to keep it to something that can be bought off the shelf (I do want to get into reloading, it's just not in the cards right now).

frank sounds like a good way to go. i haven't gotten any lowers lately but my lasts purchase was through eights armory in churchville and I would certainly recommend them too. good people for anyone looking on the westside of rochester.

I'm worried this is going to open up a whole new level of dangerous when it comes to purchases. I've always done brick and mortar stores (sadly, all big box stores), but opening up the internet to it...my wallet is already crying.

Absolutely unregistered. Can’t register them now anyway, even if I wanted to (I don’t). I’ll most likely hand them down to my kids at some point.
