  • Need a new rifle

I'm going to attempt to acquire a new rifle by deer season next year, for 2 reasons: 1) I hate shooting slugs. They hurt like a ***** and give me major flinch issues, and 2) slugs are stupid expensive at almost $4 each.

I have 2 options I'm looking at: a whole new rifle (most likely .308, and it would need to be budget friendly) or a new AR upper (I'm leaning 6.8 SPC).

I'm thinking both will be around the same price when all is said and done. I'm leaning slightly toward the AR because I can buy it in pieces as the budget allows, and build it myself.

Thoughts? And yes, I can only do one or the other.

    Hi,
They do not have to be in the same budget, not even close.
You can pickup a 308 like a savage on sale for 1/2 of the cost of an AR.
It will not be modular like an AR but still can swap calibers easily between seasons if you want.
I think the 308 with a 120gr solid bullets is a perfect white tail round and recoil is very good for anyone in the family.
Of course the 6.8 is the way to go with the AR in terms of a simple hunting cartrige but then will be spending less with a 308 in the whole package.

There are amazing deals right now in the Savage 10 action so no need to go with the axis. The axis will also work great but the savage 10 will
be a far more popular action in terms of retaining value.
It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

Will need new BCG (bolt at min) with 6.8 too if you go that route. Id probably go with a new bolt action for hunting but obviously personal preference. If you were closer or in area anytime soon id let you borrow one of mine. Good luck.

Yeah, I hadn't dug too deeply into what a new upper would cost. It appears Mel is right about a bolt gun being cheaper/more budget friendly. I only did a quick search at joebob and they only had 6.5 uppers (with BCG).

If you have a Field and Stream near you, they have the Savage 111& Axis on BIG sale, along with Rem 783. My pref would be in that order.

Thanks, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on anything right now. I'm still not sure how I'm going to manage Christmas lol

i shoot value packs of 12ga slugs from walmart that cost about $1 a pop! ha. about the same cost as the 30-06 rounds i use too (even without rebate).
that said, if you can shoot rifle where you are hunting, you can't go wrong adding one to the collection for that use.
i'm so glad they keep opening more areas up to rifle, i got to hunt with a rifle in orleans county this weekend for the first time, so pumped!

Yeah, the joys of rifled barrels and sabot slugs. There's nothing cheap.

I make 12ga slugs from 20ga used hulls using a custom made mandrel, lead shot and hot glue. Then I reloading them in regular shells. 1oz shoots as accurate as
the budget slugs but for a few cents.
Still, one cannot beat the consistency, power and reach of a decent 308.
