  • Pelican 65 Quart Cooler Gap Issue.

So my brother bought me a Pelican 65 Quart Cooler as a gift. I was a little nervous after reading someone who had ice melt in a day and it turned out there was a small section where the gasket wasn't touching the lower half. Long story short after months trying to deal with it he did a charge back and told the seller and Pelican to send a prepaid shipping label if they wanted it back.

Now we all know there are always going to be those stories and no company or product is perfect. My experience so far has not been great but I hope that I will be able to add to this in the coming days with a positive outcome.

So last Thursday I got the cooler and the first thing I did was place a flashlight inside the cooler to see if there were any gaps where the gasket did not touch the lower half. In one of the corners I did find that it was not making contact with the lower half which really negates the whole point of the thicket walls and well the gasket itself lol. I called up there customer service and they were friendly. The woman asked for my name, number, and email address. She told me she would have someone call me back and that she would send me an email that I could reply too with a photo of the issue.

An hour went by and I typically fall through the cracks so I sent an email to their general customer service email address. I did not get a call or reply via email so on Monday I sent another email with the details again. So here it is Friday and did not hear anything back. Pelican Warranties are non-transferable so technically my brother needed to contact them so in case that was the issue I had him call today. He was instructed to send an email to the general customer service email address with the photo because they could not find the two I sent.

Two hours later they replied to his email with their address and a RMA instructing him to ship it back (on his dime) and send a $15 check or money order (presumably to pay return shipping). Granted their warranty says the consumer pays for it but I think its a little messed up making a customer pay both ways when the item was defective out of the box. Sure if I had it for a year and was using it then its reasonable because you can't expect Pelican to pay for shipping both ways on items with lifetime warranties. My brother did send a email back asking for a prepaid label since it was defective out of the box. We are still waiting back on their response and hope that it is a positive one since neither of us have ever had an issue with their products before.

If Pelican reads this I would suggest that you just get thicker gaskets and then this won't be an issue anymore.

For others who may read this in the future I can offer you a solution that should cost you nothing to fix it. Below you will see a picture of the light shining through cooler but more importantly are the two other pictures. The one other picture shows the lid and gasket. The second one shows that by simply cutting some of the cardboard even off the packing materials for the cooler and placing it in the groove for the gasket you essentially thickening it up causing it to make contact with the bottom. Granted you should not have to do this for something you spend so much money on IMO BUT if you bought it for a trip and don't have the time to screw around with returns and shipping and all that this is a quick simple solution to last you until at least your trip is over.

I hope this has or will be helpful to others and I hope to report back later with updates on their Customer Service as well as testing I will do in the future on the cooler itself.

    Thanks for reading!

That's bullPeshitta! Would love to know the outcome and how they handle it. The bad customer service pisses me off more because I actually like their products.

I will definitely update when I hear back which I would assume should be tomorrow and if not will have brother send another email back to them. If they reply back saying they won't cover the shipping to fix the issue then I will just stick with my free fix and they will be dead to me. But this is Pelican so I am hoping that it wont come to that.

Well my brother did not get a reply back today so he just sent out another email to them asking that they get back to him ASAP as to whether or not they are going to send a prepaid shipping label. Hopefully will get a reply tomorrow.

Ok so when I called originally and they said someone would call me back well they did a week and a half later. Long story short they tried offering to pay for return shipping if I shipped to them. I told them that it didn't seem right to me and was told he would get back to me after seeing what he could do. A couple days later I emailed him asking if he figured anything out and they did send me a prepaid shipping label so it went out yesterday! Now just to see how long it takes to get replaced.

Just thought I would update this. Tomorrow the replacement cooler should be here and fingers crossed it will be good.

If anyone from Pelican reads this I have a suggestion for you..... It looked like the mold for the bottom section was warped. What you should do IMO is what the old Cast Iron Pan manufacturers did. Put a symbol or different letter on each mold. That way if you get numerous complaints on an issue you can track it down to a specific mold and pull it and put a new one into production.

New cooler came today......... Bad seal on this one too. This one at least is not warped but there are some scratches where the gasket from lid meets lower half. It was hard to see since it was behind the latch but a water test was used to confirm. With about 32 ounces of water in cooler and latches latched and the cooler tipped in different directions water only leaked from that section. The gasket was then taken out and put back in without fully seating it and it slowed down how fast the water was coming out but it was still leaking.

So Pelican is going to be contacted again and unfortunately the saga continues.

Here is image of scratches, which I think are causing the issue.

I didn't like that Yeti are smaller for given size which is why they are lighter. I don't really like the rubber latch things either on the Yeti. I really want to love the Pelican cooler but getting 2 bum coolers in a row from Pelican and they are made in the USA is disappointing to say the least.

I will keep this thread updated as things progress.

IF you do take the plunge with pelican check out these prices http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw...ooler&_sacat=0

Final update on this...... I give up dealing with customer service at Pelican. Nice people but take forever to respond.

I was sent document saying that cooler is designed to be air tight and not water tight so the leaking I experienced is not indicative of a problem.

My opinion is that Pelican has design flaws in their coolers. The cheapest way they could fix this is by getting a thicker gasket.

I did another test with the cooler. I placed it in the bathtub and filled it full of water. I then closed the lid and latched it and unscrewed the drain spout. As the water rushed out I opened the lid. When I did this I had no resistance meaning it is not airtight because the water flowing out should be creating a suction.

After I did this I removed the gasket and placed it back in but not fully seated and repeated the test. At this point I did get some resistance but there is still an air leak because the water coming out was not doing the gurgling thing to allow air in through spigot to equalize pressure.

So I am going to make my own changes to fix the replacement cooler for the original defective one. I am going to be looking for a substance that will stick to plastic when coming out of container and when dries becomes rubbery like the stuff your new credit cards are attached to paper with. I will put that in the groove for gasket first to essentially make it thicker. Then I will probably get something to fill in the scratch marks to make it air tight.

I am very disappointed in Pelican and for something Made in America with customer support based out of here and I think Canada I expected better help. I am glad though I did not have to pay return shipping on original defective one just to get another one that is not as advertised IMO.
