  • Stealth Cam P12 Review

The Stealth Cam P12 specs are:

6 megapixel switchable to 4 and 2 megapixel

EZ Dial programming with Quick Set .... this feature DOES work fine and it really is easy to program.

    Video Recording 5, 15, 30 seconds ... I can't comment on this as I haven't tried that feature yet

Time, Date, Moon Phase Stamp ..... I'll let you know what I see on the SD card tomorrow IF this camera takes a picture but the date and time were simple to set

Rapid-Fire Burst Mode .. this feature DOES work well with 3 picture bursts I have it set on. It can take up to 9 pictures in burst mode.

50ft Range ..... This is has yet to be seen but I'm not optimistic on this spec.

External LCD display .... this is a very basic LCD display but it does show how many pictures it took.

It can be mounted on a camera tripod and it can be attached to a tree with security cables. It virtually blends in with nearly any tree I placed it against which is nice. The camera comes with a strap for mounting to a tree and is VERY long which my other camera did not and limited me to smaller diameter trees. I purchased two Stealth Cam P12 trail cameras from Amazon and put one out today to try it. I read the instructions and decided to give the "test mode" a try to see what I could expect. Here's what I found. The camera flashes a green light to let you know it would have triggered and taken a picture. It picked me up immediately. I then moved away walking back a forth in front of the cam about 10' away. Still picking me up just fine. I then go about 20' away and .... no green light. I walked back and forth in front of the camera numerous times and from different angles. Nothing. No green light to signal that a picture would have been taken. I move back towards the camera about 6' ... nothing. I move in another step. Nothing. I move back within that 10' area and the green light goes on. I haven't gotten any pics from it yet and I'm not sure what this camera will capture in a picture because I don't know what the trigger speed really is as of yet, but I'll let you know tomorrow when I check the SD card if there's anything at all on it. I'll also give this a try for a week and see what happens and keep you informed, but from what I've seen thus far in it's "test mode" I'm not at all happy with the claim of 50ft range. I had another camera that was stolen and I can't remember the make and model, but that one would take pics 50' or more away and it wasn't an expensive trail camera.

This trail cam is under $60 so I'm not expecting the world of it, but I DO expect it to be triggered at close to 50ft ... which I'm highly doubtful of. It does take day and night photos as well as video. I will say that this camera is extremely user friendly and easy to use and set up. I do like the design as well as the wide strap that comes with it. Another thing I like is the ability to mount it on a camera tripod and the fact that security cables can be used to mount it to the tree to deter theft. Tomorrow I will continue this review and see what this trail cam produces for pictures. If nothing tomorrow, then I'll let this thing go for a week and I'll move it around to different locations and at different heights on trees and let you all know what I find. Right now I'd give it a 3 chicken finger rating out of 5 chicken fingers because many of the features are nice and it's ease of use as well as price point. This may change tomorrow though based on the quality of pictures and what it captures. Stay tuned!!

There's the company's product page. They have the price at $89.99 .. I bought mine for under $60 here ... http://www.amazon.com/Stealth-Cam-ST...tealth+Cam+P12

As to what I'm comparing it to ..... I wish I knew the make and model of the tail cam that was stolen. I do believe what I had was an inexpensive Tasco branded trail camera but that one did indeed pick up movement and capture it from 50ft or more away. I can't wait to see some pics from this P12 either!!

So today is the day I went out to check the camera after leaving it to do it's thing, if that's possible after my initial concerns on a few things. I didn't get pics of deer BUT I did get a pic of one of the guys down the road walking his dogs on the trail AND ... the camera was triggered about 30ft away!!!! With that said, I guess I have to give this camera 4 chicken fingers. I'm not going to give it a 5 finger rating because it appears that the trigger speed is a tad slow but again, these are $60 cameras and something a poor ass chicken can afford. I have set up the second one today in another area and I'll check them both tomorrow. to see what it captured. P12 cam 1 004.JPG

Now ... if you'll notice the the time/date/moon phase, that's because I hit "reset" before placing this camera out there. It also reverts it back to 4 Megapixel. This isn't horrible for what it was set at and the distance from the camera he was. The thing that does kind of bug me is the trigger speed. See how it took the pic when he was almost out of the picture?? This camera I have set to do a 3 burst of pics so the other two pics look like this ..... P12 cam 1 005.JPG

It caught him going the other way as well ... again he's near the edge of the pic so I can verify that the trigger speed is a tad bit slow but I suppose not too horrible for the money. P12 cam 1 001.JPG

I have set both cameras to 6MP so the pics I get should be much clearer but again, these aren't horrible. After having this prove that the 10ft away thing is not true, I can honestly say that I would recommend this camera to others whom are not looking for the latest, greatest thing out there and those that don't want to spend a ton of money on cameras because of theft or other reasons. This camera seems to fit the bill as it does what it's suppose to, albeit alittle on the slow side, it does work AND this is facing straight out into the opening here. If this camera were facing down the trails that lead into this opening, the object would be forced to walk straight towards the camera and I would have gotten 3 pics of whatever was walking in the trail. If/when I get night pics or pics of deer and such, I'll post them for you all to see.

One suggestion for the camera placement, is to point it down the road more, rather than looking across the road.

LOL .... that's what I had said in the last part of the review. To combat a slow trigger time, the ideal thing to do would be to face it down the trail leading into this little opening. You're spot on!!

Speaking of cameras, why is it when someone borrows them and you tell them when you need it back by, they haven't even used them for the original intended purpose they borrowed them for, then they say well I was going to set them in the woods this weekend! Well I'm already two weeks behind when I have mine set up and hate to have to ask for my own Peshitta back and made to feel like I'm putting someone out. Is it just me?
Chicken, thanks for the review, in the market for another camera and the last one I bought was rated a better camera for the money and I like my old cheap behemoth better, why make a trail camera click when the shutter operates?????? Clearer pictures and faster shutter at times, much more susceptible to angled sun and falling leaves/wind tripping the shutter. I'll look again but couldn't find a way to shut it off, and I would be pissed if I didn't buy it on clearance. Cant tell you what either one is because I don't have either one or the manuals here.
I must say I love beavers.
