Dang. A friend just ran his first sub 4 hour marathon and I was all impressed. Now I'll have to pick on him a bit.
Yeah, I can totally pick on him as I run my 10 minute miles.

In the fall I started noticing some more aches and pains than usual after running so I figured my Brooks had reached the end of their lifespan. One of the pains was my left heel. It was getting really sore after running. So I headed to the running store and spent the big bucks on a new pair of Saucony Triumphs. They're not as minimal as my Brooks were so I figured they'd eliminate my heel pain and probably last longer. I went for my first run with them and noticed my left heel still got sore. I figured maybe my bone was bruised or something so I took last week off to give it a break. I just ran 4 miles this morning and the soreness is back. It's just my left heel. Everything else feels pretty good. Anyone have any ideas what my problem is? No idea if this is just something that will go away over time or a sign of a more serious issue.

Just clarifying that your pain is in the heal and not in the achilles or the arch of your foot?

Definitely the heel. Unlike the guy in that article, I'm only doing a few miles per week. I guess I'll try some of the stretches recommended in article and see if that helps. I've felt some painful tightness in my arches in the past and figured that was plantar fasciitis. I had no idea it could show up as pain in the heel.Originally posted by alistair View PostJust clarifying that your pain is in the heal and not in the achilles or the arch of your foot?

So now I'm wondering if the padding on my old shoes was still good and if I should return my new shoes or at least exchange them for a 4mm drop shoe since I'm still within the 30 day trial period. Today is the last day I could do it. This is stressing me out.

You will always need a new pair of shoes at some point.
I have 3 or 4 new pairs of shoes under my bed waiting. I buy shoes when ever I find them on sale.

It's still bothering me.Originally posted by alistair View PostHow is your heel feeling now?
Thinking back over the past few months and considering what other variables have changed, I'm starting to wonder if my work shoes are part of the problem. Based on what I've read, and the fact that I was experiencing some numbness in my left foot over the weekend, I'm going to start wearing my old running shoes to work and continue the stretches and foam rolling to try to loosen things up.
I ran 3.8 yesterday and my new shoes felt pretty good and my heel felt fine while running, but then it was painful when I got up this morning.

It sounds like some degree of plantar fasciitis. I had the start of it a year or so ago, and what helped me was a pair of Dr. Scholl's running inserts. They offer arch support, and kept everything happy. At $15/pair, it was worth trying for me, and they worked pretty well. I also had them in my regular every day shoes, as I obviously spent most of my time in those as opposed to the running shoes.Originally posted by WARFAB View Post
