    • Ubuntu is a free Linux based operating system for pc's.

I am going to try weaning myself off Windows operating systems over time as I'm really not interested in using Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 on my home computers.

      • I've been running Kubuntu for 10 years or more (Ubuntu with a KDE desktop, traditional "start" button and menu.....I hate the Gnome interface, the last Windows OS I owned was Win 98). As long as you are not a gamer, the switch is relatively easy (especially now as compared to 10 years ago). Get rid of that Windows crutch and dive in head-first otherwise you'll never cut the cord. A more secure operating system, updates and patches without having to reboot, millions of software applications, runs on all kinds of hardware, and it's FREE! What more could you ask for? Feel free to tap me if you have questions or need advice.

        • I tried Ubuntu 14.04.3 first, but the wireless wouldn't work on this laptop. There was a thread about it in the support forum, and the issue is a proprietary driver for the wireless card. Ubuntu 12.04.5 works though.

I may try Linux Mint from a live cd, and see how that works.

          • Mint is a good one for folks moving from Winders, so is Knoppix. The issue with proprietary drivers, BIOS, etc., all focused for Windows really sucks. Kind of pisses me off that hardware manufacturers build for a specific OS. (well, other than Apple, which always has)

                • It's easy! Download and burn an image of your Linux flavor of choice to a dvd. Reboot and start your pc from the disc, to try it out before you install it as an operating system. This is referred to as running it "Live". If you like it, and it works well for you, you can install it on a separate partition of the hard drive, giving you the option of "dual boot" which means you can run either Linux/Ubuntu/etc., or your current Windows operating system when you start the computer. Or, you can get rid of Windows entirely, and install it as your operating system.

In my case I had a spare hard drive, so I took out the hard drive with Windows 7 on it and put in the spare hard drive to install Ubuntu. The particular laptop I used was my son's old Dell Latitude D830 from his college years. Windows 7 was not working well anymore, and I thought about reinstalling the operating system from the recovery portion of the HD to hopefully make it run like new, but then I realized when he bought it, it came with Windows Vista. He got the free upgrade to Windows 7 through the college.. No point in going backwards. I already have two desktops (that I got for free) running Windows Vista, and one of them will probably be going to some flavor of Linux by this winter.

Anyway, I originally installed the newest version of Ubuntu on this laptop, but the wireless wouldn't work due to this particular model's wireless card not being compatible yet, so I downgraded to an earlier version of Ubuntu that had compatible drivers that worked. It's possible that there is a way to make the wireless work with the newest version of Ubuntu, but I am not tech savvy enough with Ubuntu yet to make it happen. This is the reason why you should use a "Live" cd first, as you can find out how well Ubuntu will work with your machine without actually installing anything to the hard drive. If you don't like it, just reboot and take out the cd, and you will be back to your original operating system.
