For those that don't know, about 7 months ago I landed a new job that was a bit of a shift for me. Over a month ago I got started on a new project at work that involved doing things I've never really done before. Since it was entering uncharted territory, I took a conservative approach. My boss basically thought my approaches were too conservative, and pushed a different direction that was much more ambitious. We presented three ideas to the client; my two conservative versions and my boss's ambitious idea. The client bit on my boss's direction and boss was super happy after the client meeting. So then it's my task to actually lead the execution of the idea. To execute the idea they set me up overseeing an outside contractor who plenty of people at the company have bad mouthed in the past. When I expressed reservations about this outside contractor and whether he'd be able to pull it off, my boss suddenly had nothing but positive things to say about him and how capable he is.

Fast forward to today. We've had regular check-ins with the client to show our progress, and gotten client approval every step along the way. We're about a week away from being done with the project and need to maximize all of our time during this last week to get it looking its best. Suddenly today my boss starts asking questions about things we've been doing from pretty much the start. Boss explains his concerns and says he wants us all to stop while he and another coworker review the materials. Suddenly it's after 5:00 and I notice boss is gone and he still hasn't given us an answer. We have another client check in tomorrow and the clock is ticking on our remaining time to polish things up as much as we can. So I send out an email asking if we have a direction. Still haven't heard back.

From pretty early on, I got the impression that my future at the company was riding on this project. It's a big piece for a big client. I didn't necessarily feel like I was being set up for success from the beginning, and I've made my own mistakes along the way. But, now I feel like I'm being undermined. Not sure how this is going to play out. No idea how my boss thinks we can be at the very end and suddenly start making changes. Might be out of a job within a month at the rate we're going. Even if I keep the job and we somehow pull this off, this is nuts. Not the kind of instability I need at this point in my life. I'll be keeping my resume fresh.

I hate being put in those situations. Salesman would tell the customer “sure our photographer can do that. No problem “.
Never tells me and I show up with not the right stuff.
it really sucks. Sorry to hear!

          This!

If boss throws you under the bus, you go over his head to senior management/ownership and say "WTF?".

(this is how you get to be general manager....right NdG?)

There's enough other players involved that are aware of the situation that I should be covered politically.

???????I'm still very green at this job and there's a ton I don't know, so it's not like I'm going to be taking anyone else's job when the dust settles. What we're trying to pull off is super complex, and we have no real way of testing before it gets put into use and there is no turning back. So how this all plays out is still very much to be determined.

The most reassuring part of this for me is that it appears I have much higher standards than the client. I saw what we did last year and thought it was pretty bad, but i guess the client loved it. So I'm fairly optimistic the client will be happy. I'm skeptical I'm going to be happy though. There's just a lot to this.

But, if we lose this client because they don't like this, it's very big money and will likely lead to company layoffs. There's a little pressure.

The salesman promises happened to my dad quite a bit. He worked for a company that sold CNC machines, and the salesmen would tell the customers/prospective customers "oh yeah, our machines can do that," then leave it up to my dad to figure out HOW to do it, if it was possible at all. It drove him nuts.

There's a saying in sales: "Do not confuse selling with delivering".

sorry to hear, this is stuff i deal with directly or indirectly all the time and it sucks. the big thing that i've learned is do what I need to so that I can sleep at night. the rest will work itself out one way or another.
in our line of work we often end up with more than one person who thinks they are in charge, and the client is one or more of those. well, they can't all be happy if they all have different ideas, so I focus on what I think is right, influenced by their opinions and experiences. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't unfortunately. But like norm said, cya as best as you can, but honor yourself everyone else as much as possible. you can't answer for others' ideas, and every time I end up in that position it is the worst. if i can't buy in and own the idea, then it is miserable to have to execute and even worse to have to defend...

Just had a team meeting. My boss dictated some substantial changes. He's gone from pushing for crazier ideas and telling me not to worry about how we implement, to being more cautious than even I was being in about a two week timespan.

We've gone from a high risk high reward design to a low risk low reward design in a hurry. It's going to be lame. But, on i guess ton he bright side, now that my boss has made these calls, I'm not really in the hot seat.

I generally assume my boss can visualize everything that I can since he works in this business. It's tricky trying to communicate this stuff and get people on board with things you can't really accurately draw out. In the future I'm going to have to start assuming he can't necessarily see some of these things. Fun times in creative work.
