  • Washington Post - Misleading Headine

Really, this is the length that newspapers will go to now, writing misleading headlines that measure deaths in lost "years of life" to sensationalize it. Cmon, journalism really is dead.

This still is the leading cause of death

The estimates on annual defensive gun uses in the US start at around 500k and go up from there. With an average of about 30,000 firearm deaths annually in the US, over 10 years they're figuring about 42 years per death to get to 12.6 million years. So if we assume of those 500k defensive gun uses, only 1/5th of them would have resulted in death had the gun not been present, we can calculate that 42 million years of life have been saved by guns over the past decade. This number might be high, but considering 500k is on the low side for the estimated number of defensive gun uses, it also might be low. This obviously isn't including the number of rapes and assaults or injuries that are prevented by defensive gun uses. So even a super conservative estimate on prevented fatalities, 1/10th of defensive uses, roughly doubles the number of years lost to gun violence over a 10 year period.

Plus, this isn't even getting into the original purpose of the second amendment. There is no way to calculate the amount of suffering and loss of life that could potentially have occurred in this country under a government with an absolute monopoly on arms.

I have literally reached out to journalists. I complimented one for being most accurate on a topic and got a reply that essentially they have to put out articles to beat competition and don't get time to really research things.

I think we've all known that for quite a while. With the advent of 24/7 news stations and all the internet media, the rush to be first is far more important than the care to be right. Retractions and corrections get printed days or weeks later, but no one ever sees those.

Not to mention the 100 million or more citizens killed by their own governments in the last 100 years or so in countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, Venezuela etc. when those citizens were unable to defend themselves because of gun control.
