  • Coronavirus Outbreak

Apparently China has quarantined 7 cities with a combined population of around 23 million. They're actually stopping flights and trains in and out of the cities and erecting barriers on the roads and highways. They didn't do any of this back in the day when we had the SARS outbreak. So does this mean China is just getting more aggressive about dealing with outbreaks, or does it mean they're taking extreme measures because it's a more extreme illness? So far it appears that the death rate for this coronavirus is lower than SARS.

Thug's little Kentucky camp is looking better and better all the time.

Tin foil hat time folks. There is a "BSL-4 rated lab" (biosafety level 4 - which is the highest possible level according to Wikipedia) for studying pathogens and infectious diseases in Wuhan. The new coronavirus is said to have originated in Wuhan. All of the theories about this disease starting at a public market with exotic animals present might be a cover story.

Is this actually a Chinese biological weapon that escaped containment?

      Lyme disease.

This is no joking matter though. China has now quarantined 46+ million people across 12 cities and there are 63 suspected cases in the US with 3 confirmed so far.

So far the death rate doesn't seem too scary..... assuming China is being honest about things. Just don't google videos of the teams in full biohazard suits cleaning up bodies off the street in China.

An infected American is reportedly doing well. It’s probably true that the death toll is understated, but it’s guaranteed the infection number is. Probably as with, say, flu, the vast majority of those infected have such slight symptoms, they don’t seek medical attention.

For that reason, a comparison to the US flu death rate is also very difficult. As a share of hospitalizations, the regular flu death rate is 8.5 percent to 17 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — considerably higher than for Wuhan. But counting all estimated illnesses, reported and estimated, it’s much lower.

Once again I can't help but think about how the 'Cultivation Theory' I learned about 20 years ago (crap I'm old) in communications class has been amped up x1000 with all the constant communication we have today. Whether this virus is being overhyped or not, the power of the mass media is something awesome to behold when you look at it from a macro level.

On the one hand, the mortality rate for this virus seems no worse than a typical flu. On the other hand, China is rushing to build a 270,000 square foot 1000 bed hospital in 6 days in Wuhan to deal with people sickened by this virus. If this is no worse than a typical flu, why would it be so overwhelming to their current medical infrastructure? I'm having a hard time making sense of the seemingly conflicting facts about this story.

I'm also a little curious to hear what big flash thinks about building a facility this size in 6 days. Is it even possible?

Is that even possible? Concrete can only cure so fast.

Infection predictions look scary, but I'm not really seeing a whole lot on mortality rate.

There are temporary structures including emergency/military hospitals that I am guessing will have many modules linked at floor level.
We know current technology cannot build a multi-level concrete structure like the typical city hospital.

Whether or not the virus itself becomes a serious issue in the US, it would appear as though it's going to cause some serious supply chain disruptions. I read that Foxconn closed a manufacturing facility in China because of the outbreak. No idea how big this facility was or how many facilities they have, but I'm guessing the bigwigs at Apple are having a stressful week.

short answer nope, not 6 days. BUT, they can build so fast it's basically unimaginable to us. they have the ability to orchestrate construction efforts from large groups of highly capable workers at paces that we really can't comprehend here. It'll be pretty amazing to see how much they get done in 6 days, but by 2 weeks we will all be in awe.

I've had very interesting conversations with designers from firms like ARUP that have build pretty incredible structures there and it's pretty amazing what they are capable of.
