  • How I broke my foot.... 50 mile ultra marathon at Mohonk / Minnewaska Park

So I broke my foot April 30th during an event called "Rock the Ridge" which is an ultra marathon that takes place in the Mohonk and Minnewaska preserves. If is all on foot meaning running, jogging and walking. No bicycles or motorized vehicles. My wife and I did it side by side and was an awesome time. We are both active in training, prepping, and learning. We signed up for it in November or 2015 so had about 5 months to train hard for it. We both are very active so the trick for us was more keeping our bodies used to moving for extended periods of time. The maximum distance we trained up to was 32 miles per our training schedule.

Through the cold winter mornings of 0 degrees, through a training gap while recovering from pneumonia, and from working 3 jobs, I trained.

The race started at 6am on April 30 and we had a great pace going. Mind you, the first place winner last year completed the 50 miles in 5 hours and 57 minutes I believe. Insane, right? We were shooting to finishing in 11.5 to 13 hours tops. Well, between mile 34 and 35, I tripped over a rock and a root and broke my foot. I heard a pop and knew it right away. We were both running with camelbak backpacks on and being a prepper I had all kinds of stuff in there. I elevated then taped my foot TIGHT so blood wouldn't pool and keep the swelling down. I put my shoe back on and we continued on our race. Five miles later we got to where a medical tent was set up along the path and had them check it out. Yup, it wa s bruised and broke. Against their will, I had them retape it and we kept going. We had slowed to a pace of 35 minutes per mile since I was basically limping and dragging my foot behind me. As you can see from one of the pictures below, we crossed the finish line in 17 hours and 10 minutes. The race is a one day event and you are given 24 hours to complete it so we still finished ahead of the limit and there were about 30 people still behind us.

Many people talk about prepping and bugging out. If you think your up to really doing it, give this a shot. Going 50 miles, carrying a pack and not stopping to sleep, rest, etc is a true test of bugging out. We used headlamps in the dark once the sun went down, had to manage our water and calorie intake / output, etc.

    Below are a few pics!

Congrats on a super accomplishment. Doing it on a broken foot elevates the feat (pun intended) to a ridiculous level.

Kudos to you and your wife.

Congrats. I am sure even all fvcked up and late it was a nice feeling to make it all the way. There is no better medal than giving it all.
I am walking every day but not ready for the 50 miles yet. I was going to try Rochester to Lockport last month but I would not make it yet.
I also carry a backpack. That is a smart thing to do so you know what to expect. And by the way walking is the best thing one can do ever specially gradually
increasing endurance and because the low impact there is less risk of messing up joints that is important specially for us growing older.
I hope you foot heals nicely.

Thanks fellas.... the worst part now is this cast is zero weight bearing so on crutches 100% of the time. I am having a hard time finding a way to exercise and do some form are cardio besides the actual crutching lol.

Meke I was thinking of you during my training actually. The race was designed after the challenge that JFK gave the Marines. To complete a 50 mile race in 20 hours or less through varying terrain. I was most proud of this accomplishment since the Marines denied me entering service because I had back surgery senior year of high school. Being able to prove almost 20 years later that I could do it under the twenty hour mark was huge.

That must have been a pretty awesome bonding experience with your wife. Injuring your foot probably just made you that much more dependent on each other. Very cool.

Thanks War. We have known each other since we were 5 years old (no, not cousins you sick buggers; we went to grade school together) and have been on and off for the last 12 years. We finally both tapped out and got married in October. After completing this journey we can literally tackle anything.

Thanks Flash.... After we crossed the finish line she went into shock instantly. Shakes, could not put a sentence together, etc. Got her a blanket, some chow and sugar and she snapped out of it a few min later. The whole time we went back and forth taking care of each other and motivating each other.

If anyone decides to do something like this, the only thought that needs to be in your head when it gets tough is "Left foot, right foot..... Left foot, right foot." Just one more step actually brings you a long way.

agree 100% though not as intense as your ultra, my brother and I hiked mt. washington once (one of the longer routes) and a storm rolled in as they can.
i didn't think i was going to make it, and my brother helped push me along. a little while later and he was at full quit, and i pushed him. we both made it, "left foot, right foot"

I had the same type left foot right foot experience in High Peaks of Adirondacks when we ended up coming out at night. I barely was able to lift my legs enough to get in car and for next week I was walking hunched over like an old man..... I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.

I just can't fathom doing it with broken foot..... seriously good on you!

Sorry to hear about your trip.
I'm running The Great Adirondack Trail Run (11.5mile, 3000' elevation gain, over 2 mountains) in a couple of weeks. I will be running without any emergency gear, hope I can stay on my feet.
I live south of you in Orange County, when you get on your feet again and you want to go trail running, drop me a PM. I also hike in the Catskills and Adirondacks if you want to put in some serious miles and elevation gain.
High Peaks Guru, but prefers twin peaks

we will need a separate class for my wife and for my girlfriend.
