USMC's adventures into growing potatoes!

So I've decided I'm going to grow potatoes. Probably in bucksts. I need to look into some things but that's the plan right now.

Why potatoes? Well that's easy, a wise man suggested it

I like chips, steak fries, heck fries in general lol, boiled potatoes, mashed potatoes, salt potatoes, etc.

So I think my plan is to try and find the most versatile type of potato in terms of number of things it's good for that I like to eat. Then look into how to grow that type to get a general sense of work involved. If it seems pretty easy then I might grow a couple different kinds.

I'll keep updating this thread with what I learn along the way with progress updates. Please feel free to leave suggestions, ideas, or correct me if I'm wrong on something.

think i'll join you, I've never grown potatoes and seeing that my mom is from Idaho, i need to! think i'll try them in buckets as well.

Red potatoes don't fry up well. They just turn mushy.

5 gallon buckets? That's what I plan on doing. Any idea where to get food grade buckets in Rochester area?

I still need to decide on what types of potatoes I want to make. Then make sure I can get them to grow.

I did skim video in other thread. Looks pretty easy. Still want to know how long it take overall. I'm assuming that we can start them indoors as well if needed until leaves break surface?

The video said you just need night time temps above 45 to grow them.

the only way potatoes can be potentially "dangerous", is by eating the green sprouts
never heard of anyone croaking from such consumption

Yeah the 5 gal buckets is what i'm going to try. i have a few random food grade ones already at my house leftover from another project that i'll use. pretty sure i got them from walmart.

I am just using left over tool buckets, as long as the did not originally have petroleum products, i.e. Hydraulic fluid in them

If all you need is potatoes to grow potatoes I might check out five guys and see if I can get some of theirs for making fries.

BTW
my impetus for Potatoes is the fact that commercial stuff is just so invasively laced with Glyphosate
it simply is not good for you at ALL
a five gallon bucket will give you 5# of potats if we have a good growing season

Now everyone has me curious. I read that store bought potatoes might not be the best way to start a new plant because they're treated with chemicals that are intended to prevent them from sprouting.

the anti-Sprouting chem is supposed to be especially injurious to your Kidneys

Sorry gotta ask. Do you plan on putting any cow Peshitta in your food grade buckets? Potatoes do grow in dirt right?

How to get rid of the pickle smell frombuckets and it works great, just know that if you have quite a few of them, then you will really go through the Murphy Oil soap.

1. 1/3 cup bleach
2. 1/3 cup murphy oil soap
3. 1 gallon hot water

Completely missed this thread until now. Potatoes are really easy to grow. Cut them with at least one eye in the piece and stick them in the ground. They grow. Lather, repeat.

I once had some potatoes about to go bad, so I did just that no harvested them later that year and apparently missed some
and had more the next year.
