  • Chameleon MPAS

Well broke down and bought an antenna system for my Elecraft KX3. Decided to go with the Chameleon MPAS with extension whip. System is broadband and can be configured from 6m to 160m, which is same as KX3. I wanted something portable that can be thrown in a backpack and deployed in the field. Was seriously considering the Buddipole system but decided against it mainly because the coils have to be readjusted for each band. The MPAS seems to have great reviews within prepping community so decided to give it a try. MPAS stands for Modular Portable Antenna System (I think) and can be deployed in many different configurations. I'll post pics and review after I get it.

This is good description of system. I bought the MILEXT option and want to get the counterpoise kit but held off on it for now. It was another $70 and you can use main wire as counterpoise with vertical whip if needed. Can also use vehicle, other metal structure (fence etc) or ordinary copper wire in meantime. Chameleon uses a cool Kevlar and Teflon clad wire which helps explain cost...

I have talked with a CB radio in AM frequency across the Atlantic. Do not recall the power but I think it was 15w from a car I had once.
I had a marine antenna that I could switch as needed and in certain places at night high up in the mountains where we have our vacation home
this became like an open canvas. Going to just 4,000ft in elevation in this area just 120miles from the coast would make a modest radio
to become an amazing toy to reach anywhere 1/2 way across the world.
Many times I would join with folks that were regulars in England, Manaos (Brazil), Canary islands... normally folks with very serious setups and antennas.
Too bad I stopped doing it.

I was always amazed how a little car radio could reach that far when I stopped in the right location.
The key is the antenna and altitude as you probably already know.
Low population areas are better because of all the parasitic waves.

The other day I was reading a bunch of guys we built a wireless A/B network 60 miles away.
This was a regular old router but from a mountain in the midwest in direct line of sight with a town.
Something that normally is designed for residential can go that far with the right antennas and w/o obstacles in the middle.

Received antenna today haven't tried it out yet but materials seem top notch. I also broke down and ordered the counterpoise kit.

20 or 40 meter would probably be easiest

I finally got around to ordering the ham radio technician class book on Nov. 21st so I can start studying for the test.

I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. It's been stuck 20 miles away at the Albany USPS Distribution center since the 28th.

The USPS isn't what it used to be. This is the third item in the past couple months that gets all but lost in Albany.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I could have been enjoying his nuts.

There are a few website's where you can take practice tests highly recommended. Good luck!
