  • Homemade fiberglass body armor.....is it worth it?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_7jiIQOgwtI. This is why I hate YouTube. I find stuff I wanna try it lol now it stops pistol calibers and even a slug but I'm curious to see what either a small plate inside or coating it bed liner would do to improve it

I had contemplated making some experimental armor when I worked at a job that gave me access to Kevlar scraps. My thought was to vacuum infuse it with a two part silicone to create a soft armor that wouldn't absorb water or get degraded by dirt. It wouldn't breathe either, but I figured maybe the lack of water absorption would be advantageous for amphibious operations.

I was looking at a cheap light weight option that would stop pistol rounds and maybe shrapnel from a grenade

Yeah I saw that too but I wasn't sure if it fit in my plate carrier

I didn't see anything in the original video suggesting the guy post cured his plate. Typical epoxy resins only achieve around half of their potential physical properties without being post cured.

It is a shame when people demanding tolerance, have no tolerance

McMaster Carr has 1/2" x 1' x 3" wide titanium plates for $345, to give you a general idea of pricing.

wow that is expensive. well it is titanium. Titanium is what the use in the warthogs all around the pilots cabin. They call it the bath tub.
I wonder if there is a thickness and/or treatment like tempering the alloy to make it better for defense?
                      Just curiosity.

I wonder why they do not use them. It is more expensive but it is lighter and not more expensive than ceramics.
We know it can take some punishment that is for sure. I am just not sure how thick it has to be to be the most effective.
I think it will have no trouble stopping even the fastest 5.56

Well I know but if the thing gets so bad that alloys are out of circulation then a lot of things one needs for making ceramics are not
going to be there. Ceramics are bonded with fiberglass and other tings that might be in shortage. It is not like one can cook a
slate made of clay from the ground and put it on.
