I don't generally get out a ton every year but I make sure I'm out opening day with my dad.
We hunt in the Southern Tier (Cattaraugus County). I get up there Friday night and we can't even get up the driveway to camp. 10+ inches of snow in it. So I park at the bottom of the driveway and make two trips and get all of my stuff up to the cabin. There were spots this weekend where I was knee deep in snow (and everywhere we hunt is HILLY - so walking the hills in the snow is tiring!)
Saturday morning we're out before day break. No wind, tons of snow. It's beautiful and quiet. Plenty of tracks but no sightings. There were six of us out and around the hill (and just us. no one else generally hunts this land).
The same can be said for what we heard (a lot of nothing). It's almost like the large quantity of snow changed their movement patterns and timing. I had to leave early as the wife's mother ended up in the hospital unexpectedly but by the end of the weekend it was us: 0 deer : alive.
Talked to my brother who lives down outside of Canadaigua and he ran into the same thing (although minus the snow). Very very quiet weekend for us.
