  • Well..I'm going hunting

I've been a staunch advocate of boycotting NYS hunting licenses for the last couple of years, and for that matter, all permits, lotto, etc, that put any money into NYS coffers due to the Unsafe Act.

Well, this might be dad's last year, so I will break down, buy a regular season, and hunt with him Sat, Sun.

There's an antler restriction, so we might not even see anything that can be shot, but who knows.

Usually, by now, I would have already butchered a bunch of skippers for meat, along with just about anything else "Brown".

But these days, I don't have the giant freezer either. Just the standard over the refrigerator type that doesn't hold much.

Good luck man! I haven't hunted in NY in years also, but I do out of state to get my fix. My neighbor and some friends keep me stocked up, almost through one deer already this year.
I bought my sons out of state.

Good luck with the hunt. I'm going again for the first time in about 20 years. I hate to give the state any money, but in this case the price per pound really works out for me. To even it up, maybe I'll just buy some ammo out of state and give them the taxes, before I drive it back into NY to be fired.

What do you guys think of this processing advice? Last time I did this myself, I simply guessed at it and did a really poor job. This gives me a lot better direction. Have you seen better videos?

I've processed my own deer for years until I found a guy in Amsterdam who does an awesome job for 60 bucks.

I would have to watch the vid, but my advice is that if you have the time...which it takes a lot of, and the money to buy all the wrapping paper, etc, then you can't go wrong no matter how you slice it.

Ok, watched a bit of this, and the guy is doing a great job, but he is cutting off large portions of meat and calling them all "roasts". There's a lot of steaks to be cut out of those roasts. And, all your chop meat should come from the front of the deer, not from the rear. JMHO

Whether your hunts are successful or not, remember it's about the journey not the destination. Enjoy your time with your dad, and make every second count.

Good luck, and it's understandable why you are going.

Some pretty tough terrain to cover.
