  • Pheasant "hunt"

A friend invited me to a pheasant hunt/release yesterday. Was my first time doing this and had a lot of fun. Set up was in a couple large fields with 9 or 10 stations on the edge of a wide circle a couple hundred yards in diameter (approx). Teams of 2 at each station. Guys released a couple birds at a time in middle and you hoped they came in your direction. Every 10 birds or so they blew a horn and you rotated to next station.

Was a ton of fun and I got to spend a few hours of quality time with my youngest son. Here's a couple pics of him with birds we took.

Nice!! I did my first Tower Shoot this past fall at my local club. They are big on the birds. I liked the cleanup hunt the next day better. Something about the birds having to fly the gauntlet took the sport out of it a bit for me. 570 birds thrown, 300 killed, 18 shooters at 9 stations with two full rotations to each station. It was fun, but I probably wont do it again.

I've heard of other hunts like this where birds are "planted" in a field. If you place their head under their wing, they just sit there like they're in a trance, and you can hide them under bushes and such. The birds will eventually pull their heads out from under their wings, and as long as they're under cover, will stay put. You then go out with a guide and dog, and work a field just like you would in the wild. Some birds get away, some get missed, and some go home to your freezer.

I always wanted to go on a wild bore hunt on a farm where they chain the boar to a tree so it can't hurt you then a guide leads you to the tree and you shoot it with a large caliber rifle at a safe distance.

                Sounds like a fun time.

LOL - had a great time. Despite the fact we had them surrounded, MANY made it through. If the pheasants had any way of communicating over distance they were telling each other to fly past us! I don't know the final numbers but pretty sure 250 birds thrown. If I can get them I will add them.

Towards the end it was pretty foggy out and the birds would fly out of the haze (there's my official excuse for my less than stellar performance).

Just busting chops. It does sound like a great time. A few months ago I nearly ran over a pheasant crossing the road. Never saw one before, must have been one of the ones that got away... I've never hunted but could definitely see myself doing this.
