I was pheasant hunting years ago when my dog at that time Tige, a Weimaraner, (named after Buster Brown's dog that lived in a shoe,) went on point and flushed out, of all things, a farm hog that had gone feral. I tell you a surprise and down right scary! The hog was pretty pissed. As I contemplated if a 20 gauge Model 12, loaded with birdshot would do all that much, Tige went after the hog and chased him away. I guess if I was a pig and saw a large skinny grey dog with bright yellow eyes come after me, I'd run the other way also!

Was hunting pronghorn in Colorado years ago and came up over a little hill to see a buck and several does making the jump to light speed. Critters are FAST! Buck was in front and there was no way I was going to try a shot while they were running but then something popped into my head. I had on several occasions stopped running coyotes by howling at them so I figured "Why not!". I howled like Ozzy at a Black Sabbath show and that prairie goat skidded to a broad-side stop about 80 yards from me and just stared. Dropped him with a shot from my .300 Savage, have his skull and horns to this day. True story.

Not a hunting story, but was a real surprise! Back in the early 70's I had a paper route on Meadow rd in Smithtown LI were I grew up. Well one day stopped to put a paper in a mail-box, And got this really strong feeling I was being watched! I looked at all the window of the house I was delivering too the house next-door nothing, But this feeling was so strong. Then as I looked down at the Ivy that was growing are the mail-box I see a large red spot and just as I made eye contact, This cock pheasant took off! He was buried under the Ivy scared the crap out of me dam near fell of my bike!! To this day ever time I see a pheasant or someone mention one I can see that Red spot with a eye ball and it makes be chuckle!!NRA Life Member,NRA Instructor(Rifle/Pistol)RSO

Had a similar thing happen to me. Was sitting in a hedgerow looking across a field in the direction of where the rest of my party ere driving the woods.
Heard hooves but didn't see anything when a doe came crashing through the hedgerow right behind me. I was so concentrated on what was in front of me and looking where the hooves were coming from, never thought to look behind me.

If you don't show up one morning to hunt, forget to bring beer, do something stupid you are given the snare drum.
You are sent to the end of the swamp and have to push the whole thing while playing the drum. We wait at the other end.
The snare drum is and upgrade from our old pot and spoon method.

Not a firearm hunting story, but a hunting story nevertheless. I was about 9 y/o and spending summers in Monticello. Early in the summer I caught a garter snake. Since I needed food on a regular basis (frogs) I kept a supply of them in my minnow bucket.
Out walking the grounds with friends and saw another garter snake slither under a neighboring bungalow. I ran back to my place, got a frog and tied a string to its leg. Tossed the frog in the hole under the bungalow that the garter went into. Gave it about 3-4 minutes and pulled the string out. There at the other end of the string was the other garter snake. The frog was only half eaten. He did his job and I granted him clemency and released him. I did feed the new snake another frog so he wouldn't be totally pissed at me.
