The Newbie to ice fishing chronicles part deux ... the tip up

This one will be short and sweet. We are getting some of these in probably in the middle of next week. I have decided to go with this type of tip up. Some say it's a tip down BUT the fact that it makes a noise AND the tip of the rod flies up when triggered, it is indeed classified as a tip up. It's also a hook setting style as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you .... THE JAW JACKER!! I know these have been out for about 4-5 years now, but they are just catching on in this area. I really like this setup because I can just take rod/reel combos and no need for the old style tip ups resulting in less equipment to buy and lug around. (at least for now) I can focus on just the 4 rod/reel combos I have and use them all. These are inline price wise with what appears to be nicer "old style" wooden tip ups at $39.99.

Are those legal in NYS? I am not trolling here or trying to be funny, I know that Yo-Yo rigs and other devices that automatically catch fish are prohibited by DEC regulations in NY; that thing looks like it automatically sets the hook when the rig is tripped (which is something the older style tip-ups do not do). Have the DEC regulations changed?

EDIT: Never mind, the yo-yo reels actually pull the fish in automatically...this thing acts more like a trolling release which is GTG.

Not much different than using a down rigger imo, awesome idea. I hope it's legal

100% legal and never questioned as to it's legality by DEC. People have been using them in NY for years but this year it seems to be VERY popular and people are looking for them and to a newbie like me, they allow me to use a rod/reelreel as opposed to the old school way of hand over hand retrieval of the fish. Should I take to ice fishing, I will get one or two old style tip ups and then use them in much deeper water.

That's awesome! What are they using for bait? Doesn't look like a lot of line is out. Never ice fished before but would like to take my boy sometime. About how much would it cost to get set up with two or three rigs, an auger and whatever else you think is needed?

From my research into ice fishing, figure $100+/- for an auger, 2 rod/reel setups $40+/-, $150+ for a portable shanty should you decide to get one, lures and other accessories around $100 IF you go nuts. You could just say "screw it" and buy a few tip ups, jigs, bait and an auger and be out there for under $150 EASY!! I'm approaching this from a "cheap as possible" route because I've never done it before so I don't know what to expect. I DO know that I will be out fishing tomorrow. Suppose to be mild in the 40's so it sounds like a great day to give it a shot seeing as how I don't have a shanty to shield myself from the wind on a really cold day. I don't have my tip ups either so I'll just drill a couple of holes and do some jigging about a foot from the bottom. I'm going to target the 8-10' depth and see how it goes. Someone can literally spend thousands upon thousands on ice fishing equipment but .... not me. LOL

I saw that one. There are too many variables involved for that one to work as good as the JawJacker. There is room for improvement on it, but it's a great start to something better.

That's not going to be a catch all rig there chicken, lots of different species around. You want to catch big fish you need big bait. You can't just set the hook, you got to let let them play with their food sometimes.
Smelt fishing probably requires the least equipment and you can rent a shack on Champlain with a heater and holes drilled for you if that's what ya want. I haven;t been in a few years, the guy that runs or ran it even fetched our lunches, real nice guy.

Large pike tend to mouth the bait and then swim away, stopping after a bit to turn the bait and swallow it. When using large chubs for pike bait you want to free spool until they make the first stop, then wait a few seconds and when they start moving again you set the hook. Can't use that technique with your fancy newfangled tipup. Damn kids...get off my kawn!
