The WWII vets are few and far between these days.

I spent last weekend with my wifes grandfather, who is 94 and was in the Air National Guard in '44. Heard many stories of his time in the service.

My Great Uncle was a Marine sniper who was injured at Guadalcanal when he was shot out of a tree. He had 12 confirmed kills from what we know. He passed a few years ago at 90.

Then there was my Mothers Father who saw action on the ground in Europe as a tank driver from '43 til VE day. He wouldn't say boo about what he saw over there. About the most you could ever get out of him if you really pressed was "I drove tanks......." He passed in '92 .

The "Greatest Generation" truly was the greatest generation. I'm awed by the sheer toughness that is spewed by all of them that I've ever met. Today's youth would be put to shame by what our forefathers not only endured, but thrived in spite of.

          Amen brother.

I only learned my father earned his wings in the Navy a few months ago after my sister sent me his discharge papers. He never spoke about it other than to say he use to fly planes. Never saw any action. Died when I was 19. 29 years ago a few days ago.

His brother flew B-17s in the Pacific. Died a few years ago at 93.

Other brother served at end of WWII in south pacific in the marines. Let out early and drafted into Korean war as drill sargeant at Paris Island. Tough SOB but good man. Died about 10 years ago.

Two other brothers I've never met. One died when I was an infant. Other about same time as my dad. He served a full career in the Navy in submarines.

Yeah, greatest generation ever lived. God rest their souls and God Bless America.

Men (and women) who knew what being a nation meant, unlike the pc weenies of today.

That is a NICE looking bunch of meat!

I can still find a use for my thumb, even though it no longer has a hole to finger.

I could have been enjoying his nuts.

I sometimes wish I had been born a generation (or two) earlier. Just saying.

Yeah, I hear you, but (1) you might have been killed in WWII or Korea or (2) would have been dead already from old age, LOL.... Make the most of the hand you were dealt my friend, this merry go round only goes round once...
