  • Anyone have any good Camp Dutch Over Recipes?

I actually got a8 quart Lodge Camp Dutch Ovenfor my birthday this year and tried it once and made a Roast in it that was awesome!

I am a total noob at it and was wondering if any of you have an great recipes you wouldn't mind sharing. Also I have seen the guides on using charcoal to determine cooking temp but couldn't find anything for rules of thumb using hot coals from a fire?

Coals from a fire will be tough. It'll be based largely on the size of the coal, and the type of wood it is.

The simplest DO recipe I have:

    2 cans of fruit,
1 box of cake mix (white or yellow).
Dump the cans into the DO, cover with cake mix.
Bake (more coals on top than bottom) @ roughly 350

    It's a bit of a cobbler/upside down cake.
Old enough to know better, still too young to care

I just ordered that same DO. lots of good reviews on the Lodge products. Looking forward to using it. I have 2 camp-outs in January. Your both welcome to join the Jan 9-11 hammock camp out in Valens Conservation Area in Canada. I'm going to make a pot roast. I'm assuming you can pretty much use crock pot recipes for the DO?

I really wished I could help you out USMC,last time I went camping was when I was in school on a trip and that was when I was 15 years old, now I am 48 so that was a very long time ago..I would love to go camping but there is know one here that goes and even they did they would not do it in a tent,my landlord had a camp on Lake Champlain at a campsite called Kings Bay but there ideal of camping is a regular trailer with running water, fridge, gas stove or electric stove, hot water tank and electricity and satellite TV,I said this is not camping and that you might as well stay home as it would be the same but at a different location.

I can understand maybe a popup camper or even a camper that goes on the back of your truck but not regular house trailer like they had..

He just laugh like I had no idea what I was talking about when it comes to camping..

I could probably could get away with a 52 inch shaft but if I could get a 54 inch shaft that would be great as I could always adjust the length of the shaft

DAMN DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You went above and beyond the call on that one. I don't think I'll live long enough to scratch the surface of all those recipes.
I love where they show you the different amount of charcoal for different desired temps.

Trick is to listen to the recipe. We didnt with our pot roast. We needed to check it ever 30 or 45 minutes and we didnt. Bottom got crispy and charred (tasted really good IMO) and was tough to clean that part off.

To clean it I ended up boiling water in it and using spatula to get the big pieces of and emptied and scrubbed off rest. Then put back on heat to dry it out and reoiled.

Ha Ha. Cleaning was my next question. It's probably not advisable to make the apple crumble at night and then want to start a pot roast the next morning huh?

Not sure lol, I know that even though its preseaoned it will take time to get s real good seasoning going. Its advisable to not make acidic things for a while as it will eat away seasoning.

Oh and no soap! Boiling water and a plastic scrubber will be all you should need.

For my cast iron pans, I clean with oil. Just heat it up and let the dregs get crispy.
