  • Hot Sauce

    I was weaned on Frank's
    but there are other, lesser known sauces Petes
    Cochula
    Woodstead hot ketchup (rocks)
    Any suggestions. ??

    I usually stick with Frank's and Texas Pete's or Tabasco depending on what I'm eating. I've never been a fan of the Sriracha flavor, and I also need to be careful because some types of peppers trigger bad heartburn. The cayenne pepper sauces and chipotle pepper sauces don't seem to bother me.

    Tabasco red pepper sauce is hotter than the standard Frank's, but the Tabasco Chipotle pepper sauce isn't very hot at all and has an awesome flavor that works great with certain foods. They leave the bottles out so you can help yourself at the Chipotle restaurants and I usually use a ton of the stuff when I eat there.

    Cholula sauce is a decent red pepper sauce that isn't miles apart from Frank's and Texas Pete's, but it has a slightly different flavor that makes it a second choice. They usually have it in the Wegmans eating areas, so I use it when Frank's isn't available there.

    I was intrigued by all the hype on social media, so I made an impulse buy when I saw a bottle of the Truff hot sauce during a recent trip to a hardware store. (Coolest hardware store I've been to in Rochester.) So far I'm not terribly impressed, and the stuff wasn't cheap. Not sure if I'm going to finish it off or pass it on. A friend said it's decent when cut with butter, but I haven't tried that yet. It's hotter and thicker than Frank's, but has a very distinct flavor because of the truffle oil or whatever they infuse it with. I've never had truffles before, so I had no idea what to expect and expectations were high.

    Try sum Woodstead Hot Ketchup A friend cooked up the first batch around 1990 at his cabin in North Cohocton
    It's how being produced in Canandaigua by JJ foods many years later
    he could not keep up with Orders

      Having 'ketchup' in the name is a big turnoff for me. Can't stand ketchup.

    Havent found a hot sauce that I dont like. I probably have 8 or 10 bottles in the fridge at any given time. If I see a brand I never saw before, I buy it. Cant even say I have a favorite, if I want some spice, I grab the first one I see.

      I tend to try whatever hot sauces I find, though I’m not much for the habeñero heat anymore. I tend to stick to more traditional cayenne and jalapeño sauces. I like some heat but want to be able to taste stuff as well.

      I have Frank’s, Frank’s Buffalo, Frank’s garlic honey, Chalula, sriracha (it goes way better with Asian dishes than Frank’s), and a couple other sauces in the fridge right now that I’m trying to finish up. No one in my house cares for spicy, so I have to cook everything pretty bland then spice it up for myself.

      I had a bottle of sauce made up in Clayton that I liked, but wished it was thicker. It was a jalapeño sauce with a hint of sweet from pineapple. I liked it quite a bit but it was so runny that it just ran off my food. I tried finding contact info for the company to give them some feedback, but came up empty.

          I added a new one to the list yesterday. Tapatio sauce. It’s water based, not vinegar, for a different profile. It has a lot of flavor, and nice heat level. I’m a fan.

          Tapatio is awesome, I agree. Its got a good heat, but not the "Holy hellni won't taste anytning until next Tuesday" heat.

          I don't care much for plain Tabasco, but the Chipotle Smoked Tabasco is hands down my absolute favorite. I grab a full bottle from Chipotle every time I go. Has a solid heat level and awesome flavor.

          Frank's is my go-to for regular hot sauce. The Burmans brand from Aldi is an almost identical replacement at a fraction of the cost.

            I have red hot and burmans in my fridge. I’m still trying to use up the remnants of condiments from the river. My wife doesn’t understand buying small bottles for up there.
