  • Need some help with vintage knifes / bayonettes

    Hey guys,

Picked up an old tool box full of tools and other "stuff" off CL today and think I might have hit the jackpot

    Need your help.

So these were included in various drawers:

Know nothing about them or if I should try to restore scabbards/handles or leave them be. This is where you guys come in

    So top to bottom:

Appears to be WWI US 12" bayonnet with scabbard. Scabbard is rusted, handle is solid but needs to be polished up (?) and blade is in very good shape. Stamped 1901 on one side and US on other. Found this one on ebay asking $299...

Second one appears to be WWII German Mauser 10" stamped 7761b on one side and S/173K on other side. Scabbard is stamped 8773 on one side and 43 cvl on other side. Leather has a hole through it as if it has been hanging over somebody's fireplace, LOL. Ebay is all over the map on this one ranging from $50 to $900. This one for $135 seems representative (albeit scabbard and handle are much cleaner. Everything is solid. Blade is in great shape. Scabbard is rusted and leather is in rough shape.

Third one appears to be US M5 KIFFE Japan fighting knife with Scabbard. Overall condition is good but needs to be cleaned up (?). Blade is in very good condition. Ebay has similar one for $75 http://www.ebay.com/itm/US-M5-KIFFE-...sAAOSwQoFWQlV0

Next three don't seem like anything special but would appreciate any info.

Last one is a G.C. Company 460 Stag handle hunting knife from Solingen Germany. Ebay has this one at $90.

I want to sell all of them but unsure of values (except above as guidelines) and what to do about cleaning up / restoring, if anything. Is ebay right place for this or are their better venues? Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

I'll take those rusty old worthless bayonets off your hands, I'm feeling generous so I'll even cover shipping.
Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

      I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

Seriously though, do your research...especially concerning cleaning up/restoring. Many a high-value rusty collectible has had it's value erased by a well-meaning "clean up/restore" job. I wouldn't go any further than a good wiping down with Ballistol at this point...check the collector forums, ebay isn't your best source for value. (people tend to "ask" a lot more than they will actually "get")

I think the Mauser value depends a lot on the manufacturer. There are some factories that did short runs and those command big dollars.

Thanks. How do you tell who manufactured it? I didn't see any obvious marks other than the numbers.

Some info on the Mauser here: http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread....nd-Their-Codes

Apparently it was made earlier than WWII ('34-'37) by S/173 – Alexander Coppel GmbH (Alcoso), Solingen

Nothing apparent but it's not in the best shape...

Looks like a kinfolks. I'll do some research and let you know.

Checked the book. Nothing certain, but the aluminum hilt/handle makes me think it's a case/kinfolks.

DO NOT CLEAN OR RESTORE ANY OF THEM. You always have time to clean/restore them if that's the way to go. If you do it upfront you will likely scrub away value.

                          Nice score.

Yeah, thinking that too. I'm tempted to put the scabbards and rusted parts of handles in a salt bath and run some electrolysis on them to remove/neutralize the rust. No scrubbing/buffing though. I bet they'd clean up nicely.

On another note, the Mauser was made in 1934 by Coppel of Solingen. I think the Scabbard was made in 43. More info here

The amount of rust you see on the scabbards took 70-80 years to advance to this stage. Leaving them as is for even another year, especially in a nice climate controlled environment isn't going to worsen their condition. Cleaning them the way you've stated (salt bath/electrolysis) could once again devalue them to more of a degree than you might expect. I'd personally leave them alone, at least until you can consult with an expert on vintage militaria. No harm, no foul. Any attempt to abate rust incorrectly and you might harm/foul the scabbards value. Believe it or not, on some knives/bayonets, the scabbards could actually double the value of the knife/bayonet. It's like having the original packaging on an antique.
