  • Rope Work - Splicing Question

I'm getting ready to make new dock lines for my boat, but in the grand scheme of things, the use isn't as important as the basics.

I'm going to be getting 3/8" double raided nylon rope, and I plan to splice the lines rather than just tying knots everywhere.

I plan to add eye splices (with thimbles) over hooks for 3 of the 4 lines (the two yellow spring lines, and the one red stern line).

My question comes in that I'd like to add an eye, possibly with a thimble in the middle of the red bow line. Has anyone ever done this, or have a resource in how to go about doing this?

Get yourself a fid and have at it. I used to work with a guy that made these, total pain in the azz to do.

Beer is like porn, you can buy it but it's more fun to make your own

I have to bend over too far

    I get a boner.

bareback every couple of days, GTG. Bareback, brokeback, same $hit!

I joined a support group to help me deal with my social anxiety but I just can't seem to work up the nerve to go to a meeting......

I find this method much quicker and less frustrating:

I watched that a few minutes ago. It was mesmerizing.

I find rope work is kind of therapeutic to me, so I'm actually looking forward to doing it.

Any thoughts on adding an eye to the middle of a rope, though?

I may have to go with an alpine butterfly loop rather than a splice. I'm having a tough time finding something that's trustworthy enough and can handle the proper forces.

Looks like you need to find some fiberglass mooring whips for that setup.

No idea how often they show up used on Craigslist. Brand new they're a bit pricey.

Unfortunately we can't add anything to the dock.

Never seen an eye added to middle of line. I have spliced eyes into my anchor line though. 12 braid line, it was a PITA to start but not too bad once it was started correctly. I bought a set of fids that helped a lot. Also believe there is some good resources on New England ropes website.

Here's one for double braid from New England ropes. Haven't watched it but generally they have good instructional videos.

A double loop figure 8 works really well and you can tie it yourself quickly.
