  • Giant Mountain ADK as an over nighter?

So how would Giant be as an over nighter... looks short to the peak - Son wants to go up the roaring brook falls side past the washbowl then up. was thinking of setting up at the washbowl or up past the dipper near beede brook or however you spell it. will be going with a couple slower people .Thoughts?

What kind of distance is that trip and how slow are the slower people?

Am I short stroking or going to fast?

Time and distance won't be an issue .... was just curious about the area itself - if it would be a good overnight trip ... I imagine its a busier set of trails .... good designated sites? ..... decent non designated areas? ... how crappy is it over by dipper ?

Rt 73 to summit of Giant is only a 3 hr hike. There are several camping spots at the Washbowl, don't remember seeing any camping spots above there.
If you want a good trip try the traverse from New Russia over Rocky and Giant down to Rt73.

i remember doing giant once with a couple newbies because it's not a long hike at all. i think we went up somewhere over near chapel pond, and not the brook trail. it was a great day but i do remember them getting a little discouraged because of the false summit feelings. not much you can do about that though, and you are going to run into that almost everywhere i just remember it coming up specifically on that trail with newbies. i think going up through the washbowl would avoid that too. seems like we descended that whole mountain in like 20 minutes haha.
i've done the three peak route that alistair mentioned and it was great. of course hitch hiking back to the truck back then (15+ years ago) wasn't as big of a deal.

Trip went well - though it was an odd series of events - set up camp on the washbowl ..... had it all to ourselves until late .... a group of 3 went through and camped at another site well down from us ... was like we were alone. Did not do giant peak - a member got a sick...wasn't feeling 100% when we left so I stayed at camp and tended to the vomit hahahaha had decent time poking around the area ... was not a bad hike at all .... petty easy. On the way up ( sometime right before noon) we came across a woman with a dog looking for her friend whom she said she lost while she was taking pictures at the top of Roaring Brook falls . She gave us a description and what she had on and asked us to relay a message to her if we crossed paths. We chatted for a few minutes to try to calm her a bit as she was visibly upset .... she was going to the trailhead to try to call for help.... On we went and set up.
Trip down was slow due to the sick party being weak ... I carried her pack so she could continue down at a good clip. Get to the bottom and the trail head is almost empty .
Trip home was without incedent other than my son puking from a giant milkshake and buffalo chicken tenders .... kids never listen.
I search this morning to see if they located the missing hiker and come up with this - Visitor dies at Roaring Brook Falls

                  Thought that this was interesting;-
From "New York State Conservationist", an article aptly titled "Unprepared" describes the rescue of two young men whose plan to hike the Great Range Traverse went awry.
