  • Catskills Trail conditions?......

Ok you folks down in the Catskills - hows the trails down there.... looking to hit Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide .... then swing around to the Denning trailhead and go up the neversink(trail-less) and hit Friday from behind. How are you guys for snow down there ...we have zero here ... don't even think theres any left in the shade.

Towards the end of February - my oldest boy is leaving for Oregon in March and wanted us all to do one more short trip out before he goes. Figured that would be a good little trip - plus if he does Friday and Balsam Cap he will have completed his 35 before moving .... I would like to get him on those 2 without him really realizing it until he has done it.

Better late than never ..... hike was great Whit-Corn-Sld was as expected .... the trail from Denning up the fishermans path along the neversink was unexpectedly nice.... conditions were about perfect esp. for in February and was a good last outing with the kids before he left . The ice made for some interesting moments.

Glad it was great trip and sounds like everyone made it back safe and uninjured.

My youngest ( 19 ) took a slide down an ice face that was about 70 feet long ( crampon failure ) - scary - but he shot off the end of it and across the ice on the river like an amusement park ride ... my heart about stopped - he was laughing .... had to take a moment after that one ....

Yea I bet lol, I think I would of needed to change my shorts to!

That is actually really scary also because River ice can be very dangerous.

we had crossed a few times already - it was pretty solid but you never really know .... we went high to get around some deadfall - he was only about 5 feet in front of me and then wooosh - gone - man like a rocket

I know very little about ice but know river ice is unpredictable becuase different currents erode ice differently in different areas.

The one good thing though is that you got a good story now!
