If you don't have any choice but to bug out....or if you just want to bug out...then look at transportation alternatives. An inflatable boat with a motor could get someone out of Manhatten. Travel by rails is another alternative. Aircraft are another potential transportation tool. Many small aircraft have a range of 300-600 miles. Depending upon the scenario it might make sense to take flight. My long term plans are to have a BOL with an airstrip. Always have a plan B and a Plan C. A small dual sport motorcycle can be carried on a hitch carrier. If your main mode of transportation fails, fall back on plan B. But under no circumstances become a refugee.

Even game carts could be good idea.

Best laid plans can always be ruined . Hate to be cliche but knowledge is power. The less you need to survive and the .more you can fashion from your surroundings the better off you will be.

Do you know how to filter water by digging hole in sand near water source so the water that fills it is filtered by sand?

Do you know how to clean fish or game to eat if you need too?

Have you gone out into woods in rain with knife and matches and successfully started a fire? Have you built fire on snow before?

So many things you can learn and try that if you don't need is no big deal but if you need it later even if you just get lost in woods could save your life.

How many of you have a HF radio? Could always set up a nyshenaniguns network in case we needed to have each others back?

Bugging out farther away than one tank of gas can get you could be a problem. The extra fuel you have to carry, just in case there is none on the way to your location, means you have to leave something behind.

To be quite honest, I would love to not be in the PRNY when the SHTF but it is not really a bad place to live through the anarchy period. Think about it half this state is unarmed. Which cuts down on the number of armed potential enemies you have to face.

Good point! Much easier to defend the homestead and take what you need from the whimpy unarmed hoplophobic libs here in NY then to try and hold out in....say....Missouri or Kentucky

Once its not so. Cold out I would be happy to go to local park or somewhere and set up and show you my set up. Vhf and UHF is great for local communications but HF gives you regional or longer communications with low power I can't talk to but I can hear Europe and that's with a field set up. Again conditions permitting,

I'd be interested in an HF net...40 or 80 meters, though 80 probably would be fine most of the time. You need to run some more power USMCveteran and get a decent antenna system set up at your apartment....you could tape or Velcro the antenna around the ceiling...or use a buddistick or buddipole out a window. It might be fun to run a data mode like PSK31, and you can run low power with the data modes.

my apartment is half underground so inside antenna is no go, i already tried and hear nothing but static. 40 meters would probably be doable for most people too. I plan on setting something up when i hopefully get house in spring.

Have you checked out ham thread yet? Is good primer for getting license . I will see what i can put together for more stuff specifically about HF and next time we get together I can show you my setup.

I may look into the HAM radio stuff! I played with it a little when I was in Boy Scouts a long time ago. I've also always wanted a short wave radio to hear stuff from all over the world. I've always been fascinated with broadcasting in general which was a career I fell into. I'm more fascinated with how the equipment works rather than using it though, lol! If things would have clicked a little sooner for me I may have pursued becoming a broadcast engineer.

Good advice on this thread from everyone! Lots to think about!
I could be wrong...it's happened before and it'll happen again.

Definitely, I also enjoy contacting special event stations on HF . I have talked to home stead of little house on prairie, bunch of light house stations, spoken with arrl portable stations a few times, just fun all around to see who you can talk too.
