  • Cutco knifes

Anybody know if these are decent knifes? Actually looking at some of their cooking knifes, but they seem to have a nice selection of outdoors and survival knifes too. American made.

It seems Ka-bar is owned by cut-co but I don't know if the knifes are the same. Never realized KA-BAR is a NY company. I actually didn't realize KA-BAR was a company, lol, I thought it was a type of military knife, ha, ha...

Ha, interesting tidbit on that ka-bar page above. Name was taken from testimonial received in early 1900s. Trapper used knife to Kill A Bear that was attacking him and all that was legible was K A Bear. They picked up the name from that letter. Interesting stuff...

I don't know anything about the outdoor knives, except they seem a bit pricey.
I am familiar with their kitchen knives, though, and they are overpriced junk.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I cook with Henkles Pro-S ... old world, old school and I love them. Served me well for many years. I'm sure they will outlast me.

The cutco knife I was looking at is something I've never seen before, but it looks like it makes sense. A cheese knife with skeltonized sides.

I've been know to make some anti-pasta's now and then and "cutting the cheese" for lack of a better term, lol, has never been an easy task.

Having company over today for my kid's birthday and thinking about getting started on my next creation!

The cheese knife looks like it would work well, but the price is ridiculous. You could get something of equal quality for half that or less.

                      Just as an example:
                      http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00005...110_SY165_QL70

                      Less money, FAR better quality.
I don't use Global knives, but they are high quality, and used by many professionals. I'm just not one of them. I don't care for the ergonomics of them, but it's less money than a cutco, and I promise you, it will last you many lifetimes.
Just as a disclaimer, I don't claim expertise on the subject, but I've been cooking professionally for over 20 years, and I have a knife of some sort in my hand most of the time, every day. I've owned and used almost everything imaginable, from dirt cheap to high end hand forged blades. I would buy a $5 knife from Walmart before cutco.

I admit the outdoor line is intriguing, but I can't see the cutco version of the Ka-Bar being worth twice the money of a Ka-Bar brand Ka-Bar.
Politicians are like diapers. They both need to be changed often, and for the same reason.

I believe cutco will sharpen your knives for free - may even polish them for the lifetime you have the knife. I remember seeing something on tv that showcased the company. Things may have changed as that was years ago.

Still true today. And they'll replace them, Lifetime Warranty. However, with the inflated pricing for what you get you're basically paying for all that service upfront, even if you never use it. Which is my guess that 90% of customers never even contact Cutco warranty again.

I think there are better knives for more reasonable prices on the market.

I remember years ago there were an inordinate amount of college students selling Cutco cutlery to family, friends, and door to door. Almost like a pyramid scheme.

Cutco are great knives and they are made in Olean NY.
So while they may be pricey you are helping out fellow NYer's and the southern tier economy.
