Seems calcium carbide would be a good thing to add to your kit. Add water and a spark and you've got fire. Throw it in a miner's lamp and you have light source. Have no idea how much calcium carbide these things consume. Quick search turned up about $100 per 10 lbs with haz mat fees. Anybody have any experience with these things?

They usually hold a couple of ounces. It's hard to say how long it will stay lit because you can adjust the size of the flame. On a low setting you can get 10-12 hours burn time. You should check out some caving forums, I belive they still use them.I bought my sons out of state.

When I was shooting competitively I would use a carbide lamp to blacken the sights on my rifle. Put a couple of small pieces of calcium carbide in the lamp base with a little water or saliva to produce acetylene gas. Blacken the sights with the soot produced when burning said gas.
