Taking some friends on a little hike at the end of the month and they wanted to do Marcy and a few other areas up there so I figure leave the car at the LOJ hit avalanche pass and lake -play in the trap Dyke ... roll around Mount Colden and up to Tear of the clouds ... I have never been on the south side of Marcy there .... how is it ?... Anyone gone up the backside - after Marcy just one of the standard trails down and out .... thought that would make a nice loop for Adirondack virgins.

I've been to top of March and did not do south side but we considered it. Technical wise I think the trap dike is most technical. Should be good to go I would think.www.AvidArms.com I'm STIHL out of conditioner!!

Hate to say - but yes, I have gone up the backside.
This is a do able day trip,I done this and more in one day, but you need to realize that although it looks like a relatively nice loop on the map, this will take the average hiker well over 12 hours.
The hike up from Lake Colden is a long steady climb, and the climb from Lake Tear up to Marcy, although only about one mile in distance it is steep and will take you over an hour. From the summit of Marcy you will then have the long 8mile (4hour) death march back to the Lodge.High Peaks Guru, but prefers twin peaks
we will need a separate class for my wife and for my girlfriend.

After a scramble up a portion of the cleft, you will have to climb up a steep, exposed slide climb. One missed step step or slip on this slab and your are falling to the Lake.High Peaks Guru, but prefers twin peaks

I've been from Colden up to lake tear then reversed it back and out . This last time I went to check the backside from the upperworks to colden and the back of marcy ... looks like about a 30 degree incline - no problem as that will be a day 2 deal I'm sure( prob won't leave the LOJ until mid/late morning) . I am looking for different routes off Marcy - the"standard" route up and back from the lodge is kinda boring - maybe find an interesting place to veer off and camp and make day 3 going out interesting.
