  • Fire!!!!! Good!!!!!

As anyone who is looking to survive out there in bad weather, you know that fire can be critical to survival. I just picked up some new fire steels for emergency fire starting. I don't like to rely on a lighter and wouldn't want to bet my life on matches. Fire Steels are a sure fire () way of starting a fire. I have cotton balls with vaseline, dryer lint, cotton pads soaked in paraffin, fat wood and magnesium block to aid starting.
I just wanted to let everyone know what a great company firesteel.com was. I bought the Gobspark Armageddon with palm striker and Magnesium block(burns at over 3000*). High quality items all made here in the USA NOT China! The owner Ron is a great guy to deal with. I highly recommend him. Plus he lives in New Hampshire, What's not to love about "Live Free or Die"!

Yeah those Blastmatches seemed a little weird, seemed almost like a gimmick so I just kept it Old School. I do recommend the magnesium blocks (Ron's are real) for adverse conditions. Just scrape a pile the size of a quarter and you can start wood that's completely soaked. That stuff burns white hot.

I have a lot of fire starters I need to test, I should get them all together and maybe do a review if I can find them.

Magnesium is the only other type I've used, besides Bic. Like that too, but the shaving just seemed like too much work. Last week I tried the Hand Sanitizer bit. 70% Alcohol, couldn't get it to catch at all. Perfect conditions, driest wood I've had in a long time. Maybe it was just the brand...extra moisturizing lanolin or something. Calling that one Myth: Busted.
