Overnight camping pack

Got to do an overnight with my son this weekend for the cub scouts and got me thinking it would be a good time to boil things down to the basics and teach him a little about "survival". Kinda hard to do given the forum as everything is pretty much planned around group activities and meals etc but hey if I'm gotta do this he might as well learn something from it. What do you guys recommend for a minimalist pack? Thinking of breaking out the two man hiking tent which is a fraction of the hotel we bring when camping with mom lol. I've got to check but think there is a fishing activity for free time. Can anybody recommend a breakdown kit that won't take up too much real estate in a pack?

Tent? Make a lean-to out of branches and pine boughs, sleep on a bed of pine needles. A few feet of fishing line and a hook tied to a stick for fishing. You did say "survival" camping right?

Seriously though, not a lot of good advice from me......sorry. I'm sure somebody more experienced at this will chime in soon. You and the boy have fun!

I've got a collapsible Shakespeare.Packs down to less than a foot and extends to 8ft. Fits in my deck bag for kayaking.
Also have a mini set up that the rod breaks down to the size of a large sharpie. Don't know the name, it's small and cheap. Haven't even tried it yet. It's a back-up.

Thughes this is organized by the cub scouts so I'm sure no leantos will be found. He actually needs to have a tent and set it up by himself to earn credit towards some badge or belt loop. I have a Walrus two person that is as close to a leanto as you'll get lol. Very small and light weight. He's in for a surprise lol.

At boy scout camp I didn't bring a rod so I tied some fishing line to a stick, added a hook and off I went fishing, I caught some small fish too. So all you need is the tackle and can make a pole from nature.

As far as minimalist goes you need food water and shelter. So tent, food or way to get it, fire starting stuff, way to purify water whether it be tabs, filter, boiling.

You develops what you need over time by packing to much at first then getting exhausted carrying it lol and making tweaks the next time and so forth.

Oh and hammock camping is so much more comfortable then ground sleeping but you can't really share it with someone unless you get one of the few models where your both under same tarp next to each other.

Probably Durland also?? Put valley area? That's where we do our BSA sleepings..aand it's usually wood cabin area with bunkbeds..sometimes needed a tent

from my experience with scouting, packing bare bones and light doesn't "click" with someone unless there is some distance in carrying involved.

especially when there are so many activities already in the day, the kids' want a chair at the campfire (for example). they don't have time to lash one up.
and if they had to just walk 30 yards from the truck...
